I came across this organisation recently and it set me thinking about different potential "models" for promoting and running WHS.
http://www.hadrians-wall.org/page.aspx/About-Hadrian's-Wall-Heritage-LtdI was, at first, somwhat negatively inclined towards "Hadrian's Wall Ltd" with its Web site full of "management speak" (I particularly noted the idea that Hadrians Wall Ltd will be "offering inspirational heritage and spiritually uplifting outdoor educational and tourism based visits"!!) and a board whose members' CVs demonstrate how widespread the Quangocracy is in UK (Fancy a job as a "Director of Sustainable Development" with Hadrian's Wall Ltd - apparently it pays an "attractive" salary!!). Also it seems potentially dangerous to assign the conflicting objectives of site/environment protection and increasing visitor numbers/spend to the same organisation. But, on reflection, the approach seems to have its merits and I have warmed to it.
Do Forum members know of any similar or other "innovative" approaches to WH site management in operation elsewhere in the World? Or does this approach demonstrate a typically "British" approach which perhaps links Heritage and Mammon a trifle too closely?
I can think of a couple of UK sites which already seem to have become somewhat excessively "shopping opportunities" (Derwent Valley Mills and New Lanark) - but the UK economic model for "heritage" expects such sites to "wash their own face" financially!
