I think you might be wrong.... even if Chris Packham said that the future of the World depended upon it!!! There are arguments that the carefully managed aspects of Epping actually result in more biodiversity than letting nature truly take its course and allow a particular eco subsystem to take over. it is argued that some insects, fungi, mosses only survive there because of the management. and that "human heritage" has a value as well????

Ah yes fair enough, I really am not a natural heritage kind of guy (even if i now live 1 minute from a national park) and mostly the arguments I hear in the UK on natural heritage relate to trying to stop any form of building in fields on urban fringes.

And yes thinking about it the value of the New Forest is in its centuries of managed landscape, the same as the Lake District, so I would imagine you are correct on the opposition to it stretching beyond what I, as an urbanite, would regard of a visiting experience.
