How do you guys count the Roman Frontiers? (UK/German, dutch, 2 other German parts for 2020/2021 plus others coming.

Wondering how fellow WHS travellers count this one.

I'd say: find one location where there is actually something to see above ground, perhaps even including a museum. The reviews do indicate such locations already (Hadrian's Wall, Saalburg, Xanten).
Be aware that the 4 main stretches (UK/German, Lower Rhine, Danube etc.) will become 4 separate WHS, so you "have to" visit a location in each.

Counting is a general question. For a site like Limes getting anywhere near 50% seems impossible, unless you want to a long hike.

So far I have visited:
* Eastern most part of Hadrian's wall near Newcastle
* Some parts of Antoine's wall.
* Hiked the German Limes along Osterburken.
* Austrian Limes near Vienna
* Bulgarian Limes along Danube.

By far the best bits are in the UK, so much so that I feel this should have been the only component being inscribed. For Hadrian's well best area seems to be around Hexham.

Germany, I wasn't impressed. Austria neither, Bulgaria with the Danube was pretty nice.

To count having visited a WHS, you must have been in the core area. When the site is in series, you must have gone to the core area of at least one site in the series. For personal satisfaction, the best is to choose an iconic site of the series. For non-penetrable sites like Chauvet or Stoclet, it may be enough to touch the limit of the central area without entering it.

I agree with Nan that the UK parts are the best, although I enjoyed the museum in Bad Homburg

Personnally, I tend to stick to a 50%+ policy for ticking.
Therefore I have given up ticking "Frontiers of the Roman Empire".
Anyway, I find it unreasonably expanded over time, with little OUV added with each extension.
As of today, 444 locations, with 565 on the TL.
I have also give up on:
- Primeval Beech Forests (77 different locations)
- Prehistoric Pile Dwelling (111 different locations all inscribed at once, but mostly underground or underwater)
As I like rock painting, I have not yet given up on "Rock-Art of Mediterrean Bassin"'s 758 sites

seems fair. I normally also want to see at least 50% but if it's a site with just 3-4 places i normally go for 100%.


Ok so that's no problem; as I'm looking now more to Germany rather as the UK.

Yes agree, but only "be" I don't count. I want to see and have a good impression as well.

It's just places with dozens locations or as Walter says hundreds; then you take to much time to visit one site.

Will see; i probably pickup the best place and if there is more just when in the area.
