Pompeii Tragedy

Unfortunately, Pompeii is falling to pieces and little is being done to preserve such a unique heritage. In the link below there are some photos showing the latest considerable damage caused by bad weather. I believe it's high time that UNESCO and the (in?)competent national authorities intervened to put an end to this universal tragedy. I think Pompeii should be listed as an endangered WHS and hopefully it should receive more funds to protect it.

Have you read the recent history on this - the condition of Pompeii has been discussed at the last 3 WHC. Time passes but the decisions seem to be going round in circles
a. In 2011 with this conclusion
"Finally requests the State Party to submit to the World Heritage Centre, by 1 February 2013, a report on the state of conservation of the property and on the implementation of the above, for examination by the World Heritage Committee at its 37th session in 2013, with a view to considering, in the case of confirmation of ascertained or potential danger to the Outstanding Universal Value, the possible inscription of the property on the List of World Heritage in Danger."
b. In 2012
"Expresses its concern with regard to the state of conservation of World Heritage property of "Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annuziata" and urges the State Party of Italy to intensify its efforts towards implementing the Committee's decision taken at its 35th session (UNESCO, 2011);"
c. In 2013
"Requests furthermore the State Party to submit to the World Heritage Centre a progress report by 1 February 2014, and an updated report on the state of conservation of the property and the implementation of the above by 1 February 2015 , for examination by the World Heritage Committee at its 39th session in 2015, with a view to considering, in the absence of substantial progress, the possible inscription of the property on the List of World Heritage in Danger ."

The Reactive Monitoring Mission which reported in Jan 2013 decided NOT to recommend immediate "in danger" status but give instead a further period for Italy to put its house in order and the WHC went along with this. Whether the latest events will make any difference ..........?

Thanks for the excerpts! Unfortunately, Italy is in the middle of a political, economic, financial and judicial crisis at the moment so I think that the only real incentive for Italy to put its house in order and to protect its cultural heritage is to put money where their mouth is.

To complicate matters further, Italy is being severely effected by natural and man-made disasters in several regions ... i.e. the national authorities will most certainly continue to postpone any interventions until it's too late.

I really hope that the latest events will make a difference and that Pompeii is not left to crumble further
