Is there any archive of sites that have been removed from the current listing of the tentative list? If so, can anyone provide a link to this archive?

I don't know of an official archive. To be honest, the history of the tentative list is sketchy. Sites get renominated over and over again under different names, or sometimes under the same name but with a new number ID.

I've tried to keep up with the changes as best as I could, see the part "sites that have been nominated in the past" on each country page of this website, for example:

Perhaps this is something we can update, much like the "official" websites.

I have the full list (64) sites that were part of the former tentative list of the United States.

It occurs to me that this single category actually contains 2 different ones
a. Sites which have been nominated unsuccessfully in the past (but are no longer on the T List)
b. Sites which were once on the T List (but were never even nominated and are no longer on the T List)

We did a pretty thorough trawl through the minutes of every WHC to cover Category a. and have probably captured most of these since the records of nominations and decisions are likely to be complete.
The records for sites which never even got nominated before being removed from the T List is probably less complete as I can't remember us ever doing a year by year check of T List additions from the earliest years - and indeed I am not sure that the minutes list these comprehensively.

Out of interest, I have just looked at the 1985 WHC minutes and found the following T List entries which are not on the current T List but never got nominated and aren't on our list of "Sites which have been nominated in the past" either. I have tried to avoid listing sites which have been included within other sites since that date (but may not have been totally accurate because of lack of knowledge and naming changes!)
Clearly many of these proposals represent a very early "idea" of what WHS was going to be and have been somewhat overtaken by the passage of time - but are, none the less, interesting - in part because of that. What we don't know is when they got removed from each country's T List - we could no doubt guess if we knew the renewal dates. A similar trawl through the documents of other early WHCs seems likely to identify yet more "forgotten gems" which have never made it and possibly never will!!

Since all tentative list sites have to be registered with UNESCO, I would be almost positive that they have all of the tentative list sites both past and present archived either on paper or electronically. I wonder if an individual contacted UNESCO requesting information on this issue if UNESCO would provide information.

Back in the 1980s the "UNESCO world" was very different
a. Its computer systems were far less comprehensive - documents were primarily produced on paper and were not recorded electronically. What you see of such papers today have been scanned and not everything is available/searchable
b. Its systems and procedures were in an early stage of evolution - the T List system was very much a "feel as you go" approach
c. It was less "open". Last year's WHC was a high water mark in openness with its Webcast of events. Lodged documents weren't always publicised automatically

Nevertheless, as I showed with the above information on the T Lists of Germany, Peru and Spain from the 1985 WHC there is a lot on the Web site from old scanned documents but it isn't easily accessible and requires time to be spent on searching for it! Past experience has shown that individual requests direct to UNESCO don't get very far (hardly surprising really I guess)! Would you like to take on searching across a few more of the early years? Go to the UNESCO Web site ---- "About World Heritage" -------"Sessions" and choose some early years to see what is publicly available. Let us know which years you choose in order to avoid double work!

Valencia exchange and Berlin Pfaueninsel and Glienicke did get inscribed.

Has anyone ever come across Quarry Bank Mill/ Styal in England being put on a tentative list (or even near one) at any stage?

I stumbled across a claim that it was considered but as it was already well looked after by the National Trust they decided not to pursue WH listing. It could well be conceivable that back in the early days that is how many in the UK viewed the list, but just wondering if anyone knew anything about it?

I can only assume that it might (once) have been considered for being part of the Manchester Site which was put on the 1999 T List for its cotton and canals (but wasn't proposed again for the latest UK T List) - Quarry Bank Mill is situated out near Manchester Airport. The entry only mentioned Manchester plus Ancoats, Castlefield and Worsley - with the Canal system

Santa Cruz Hospital is in Toledo I think, not Granada. It is included in the nomination of Toledo.
Wilhelmshoehe is on the current German T-list for its water features. I think the earlier proposal included the them too but also the palace which isn't included in the current proposal.

You are right - but I have checked the details of Spain's 1984 T List and it defintiely specifies "Granada"!!

I have also looked at a few more very early T Lists from the 1984 WHC for sites which have disappeared (Like the lists from Germany, Spain etc discussed at the 1985 WHC, these T Lists are also dated 1984 but must have been submitted early enough to get discussed at the 1984 WHC). Again please make due allowance for changes of names and lack of knowledge about which sites have been subsumed within others - either as "inscribed" or as "current T List"

I have now worked my way through the T Lists submitted at the 1986 WHC.
The following represents my best attempt at listing sites on those T Lists which never got inscribed nor are on current T Lists (and weren't submitted and rejected). So the T Lists described at the 1984, 1985 and 1986 WHCs have all been reviewed now for such sites and, as far as I can see, there was nothing earlier than 84 in the WHC documents
