A bit early maybe, but there are already reports about sites being reviewed for inclusion in the summer of 2011:

- Japan - Ogasawara islands

I presume we are referring to those sites whose papers had to be submitted by Feb 2010 for possible inscription in Jun/Jul 2011. Some reports are vague (or even incorrect) about when exactly a "submitted" site is due to be considered or even if the country actually managed to get the papers presented in time but, as far as I can see, these below ARE for possible inscription NEXT year!!

Back in late 2009 this nomination was put back a(nother!!) year and will not be considered in 2011. It missed the Feb 2010 deadline and papers are now due to be ready for Feb 2011 for consideration at the 2012 WHC

so UK will not have a nomination at all for 2011.
The Monkwearmouth/Jarrow bid has had a chequered history. Originally placed for consideration at this year's WHC it was delayed by 1 year when "Darwin at Down" was withdrawn in 2007. The Antonine Wall (2008) and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (2009) continued in their original places (successfully of course) but Jarrow's slot for this year was usurped by the revised Darwin nomination. And now Jarrow can't even get ready in time for 2011!!

The "puff" about making a "strong" nomination better is of course so much smokescreen . But I guess that UK's Department of culture was quite pleased to see a delay and a blank year - which is what it really wanted anyway.
Jarrow would seem to have been excluded from the review of UK's Tentative List however -though that process could have reported before the Feb 2011 nomination deadline - but I guess it would not have been fair to expect the final touches to be put to a Nomination File which might not even go forward!!

It looks as if they did fail to meet the Feb 2010 deadline for papers to gain consideration for 2011. Indeed it now seems that they are targetting papers for Feb 2012 for consideration in 2013 - a slippage of 2 years in a few months! Inded the whole thing seems to be at a relativelly early stage - far too many potential sites totally underestimate the time and effort invovled in getting everything in place.

As for Batanes Cultural Landscape, we are hoping the new provincial government will do something to stop the building of new "type" of houses.

Great Work.

There are a few interesting ones on there for next year. Yap Money sites, Wadi Rum, Meroe, Jeddah, Bali and the Fagus Works seem of decent quality.

Glad to see the usual suspects putting forward anything mildly average with-in their realm. I must admit to not knowing a great amount about these sites but is the list going to greatly improved by another Chinese mountain, another group of derelict western European mines, another princes palace.....

But still, it is good to see a few new countries getting involved; Lesotho, Micronesia, Palau, UAE and Jamaica all aiming for a first site!

I am a bit suprised to not see any sites from the United States. With the 14 new sites placed on the Tentative list, I assumed at least one potential inscription per year.

Sites that I believe have a high chance of inscription, and seem to be in good order.

Cultural
- Civil Rights Movement Sites (2008)
- Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings (2008)
(Low number of 20th century sites insribed)

Natural
- Petrified Forest National Park (2008)
- White Sands National Monument (2008)
(Deserts have very little representation on the list)

Does anyone have any insight into the inscription plan for the United States tentative sites? Perhaps 2012?

Very excited about China's Wudalianchi National Park. If successful, it will complete the third province (Heilongjiang) in Northeast China which does not have a heritage site yet. The other two - Jilin (Koguryo sites) and Liaoning (Qing Dynasty tombs and Imperial Palace) already have theirs.

To date, Guangxi, Shanghai, Hainan, Hongkong and Taiwan do not have any sites inscribed in the list. (Of course, Taiwan has a special issue here) Zhejiang, on the other hand has Hangzhou for 2011; but Danxia can be successful soon. Two of the 5 danxia areas are located in Zhejiang.

These other five: Tianjin, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai and Xinjiang were mentioned in "The Great Wall" - but I think they are other sites that can better represent these places.

Does anyone know when the transboundary nominations of Le Curbusier, Chapaq Nan and Silk Road are expected?

Two Australian IUCN members have already visited the site and evaluated the effective way against the alien species and management system.

This article reports on the 9 day (!!!!!!!!!!) visit by "UNESCO's consulting institutions" (Presumably both ICOMOS and IUCN since it is being nominated on Natural and Cultural criteria)

Has anyone ever seen any estimates/accounts as to how much these investigation visits and the overall Advisory Body Evaluations cost - AND who pays for them? Is it the nominating country or UNESCO? 9 days "in the field" (for a "delegation" no less - I wonder how many people that is!) does seem excessive given the ability to use e-mail, video conferencing etc to identify and even sort out many matters before hand, enabling a concentration on those matters/people which/who really need to be seen in situ. Perhaps they are travelling everywhere by camel!!! I am sure there can't be any "excessive hospitality" involved .... can there?
