What do you think the role of museums is (or should be) concerning World Heritage?

I'm currently studying for my postgraduate dissertation and trying to gather existing information, ideas and resources about the role of museums within World Heritage agenda of UNESCO - not just those museums physically situated in a WHS, but also museums in general. In particular, the museum's role in advocating both the value of heritage in general and the importance of preserving heritage to the general public (i.e. part of WHS aims of awareness-raising).
