Full name of site: Nan Madol
Country: Federated States of Micronesia
Short description of site (also include multiple locations if applicable): Nan Madol is an archaeological site, with buildings that were built during the 12th or 13th centuries. the buildings are situated on artificial islands, with canals in between. it is for this reason, it is some times called "the Venice of the pacific". the buildings are constructed in a distinctive style of architecture, that resembles interlocking logs of stone.
Criteria (cultural, natural, mixed): Criteria III, Criteria IV, Criteria V
Outstanding universal value / comparative analysis: there are a few other Polynesian archaeological sites in the world, but none as magnificent, or large as Nan Madol; and none are on the WHS list. also; none have canals.

this isn't on the tentative list, but i think it deserves WHS status.

Ah, Nan Madol!
After you posted this, Xeres, I ran to one of my bookcases where under a layer of dust I found 'The Enigma of Nan Madol' (in Dutch, dating from 1981). I read this when I was at high school, during a phase when I really was into the works of Thor Heyerdahl and Erich von Däniken. The book has wonderful romantic pictures of life in Micronesia and tells about the legends surrounding Nan Madol.

So for old time's sake (and because the Pacific is underrepresented in the list anyway), 1 vote from me!

Agree - This has long been on my "wish list" to see if I can ever make it to the N Pacific. "World Class". I wonder why FSM has only put the "Yapese money" sites on its T List??
