Full name of site: Lago de Atitlán Country: Guatemala Short description of site (also include multiple locations if applicable): Considered one of the world's most beautiful lakes, it is a huge caldera which is filled with water. It is also the deepest lake in Central America, and is surrounded by three volcanoes. Unfortunately, the introduction of the Bass in the 1950s, destroyed two thirds of the lake's native fish. Criteria (cultural, natural, mixed): VII, VIII Outstanding universal value / comparative analysis: It is considered a superlative in beauty; in the words of Aldous Huxeley "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing." |
