A friend has just asked me which European sites are still missing from the list. I tried to think and came up with a surprisingly long list of about 40 (!) sites. So my conclusion - yes, there are still important European sites missing!

My list:

UK: Oxford/Cambridge as early university towns (not even on the T-list due to their the universities' objection since there are already many tourists), some major railway sites from the time of the industrial revolution (e.g. Forth Bridge), Jordell Bank (history of science), Mackintosh in Glasgow (planned for T-list), St Andrews (golf history, planned for T-list), Newmarket (horse racing, planned for T-list), Brighton (history of mass (working class) beach tourism)

Greece: Knossos (Crete - major Minoan site), Santorini (planned for the T-list for both natural setting, folk architecture and the archaeological site of Akrotiri)

Germany: Nuremberg (Nazi sites), Bayreuth (Opera House), Hamburg (Speicherstadt), Saechsische Schweiz (planned for T-list)

Czech Rep.: Spa Triangle (Karlsbad, Mariabad, Franzensbad), Sites of Great Moravia

Belgium: Westhoek (only major site from WWI)

Cyrpus: Famagusta (now in Northern Cyprus so not on T-list)

France: Hangar Y (history of aviation), Camargue (natural), Carnac (megalithic monuments), Cote d'Azur (mixed natural and cultural, only natural on the T-list), Le Corbusier

Ireland: Clonmancoise (Celtic Christianity still unrepresented)

Italy: Capella degli Scrovegni (Giotto), Certosa di Pavia (the most significant in Italy), Lago Maggiore with Isola Bella, Via Appia, Carrara marble basin

Malta: Mdina

Norway: Svalbard

Portugal: Coimbra (university)

Russia: Kremlins, Bolgar Ensemble, Ural NP, some Communist architecture in Moscow or Volgagrad (not on T-list for unknown reasons) and many natural Asian sites (e.g. Lena Pillars)

Netherlands: Keukenhof (flower growing, not on T-list probably because there already many tourists)

Denmark: Tivoli (amusement park, not on T-list, probably the same reason)

Urkaine: Krim, Chernobyl!

All of these places are interesting, but which ones are truly outstanding? I have only visited a couple, yet 40 doesn't seem like such a high number. If Europe only succeeded inscribing 40 sites or so in the next 10 years while much of the missing sites around the world were inscribed, I would consider this a great approach. It would be a nice transition from a Europe dominated list.

I agree. There should be an official ban on any European churches (except of the Giotto capella :) ), palaces, castles, vineyards, mining sites, villages and old towns! This would reduce the T-lists tremendously!

Since both of these past-times are retrograde steps in human cultural development, I don't think we should celebrate them with inscription!

A large portion of the list you made is progressing rapidly. (Some already inscribed)

Germany: Bayreuth (Inscribed), Hamburg - Speicherstadt (planned 2015)

Czech Rep.: Spa Triangle - Karlsbad, Mariabad, Franzensbad (planned 2015?)

Belgium: Westhoek (planned 2014)

France: Le Corbusier (progressing)

Norway: Svalbard (planned for 2014)

Portugal: Coimbra (planned for 2013)

Russia: Kremlins (referred 2012), Bolgar Ensemble (planned 2013), Lena Pillars (pending)

Saechsische Schweiz will not be nominated by Saxony for evaluation for the new German T list. They suggested a transnational nomination of the whole national park together with the Czech Republic.


There is a working group of several cities preparing a serial nomination of European spas: Karlsbad, Marienbad, Franzensbad, Luhacovice (Czech Republik), Spa (Belgium), Vichy (France), Montecatini Terme (Italy), Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden, Bad Kissingen (Germany).
