As I was reminded once by an Intourist guide on arrival at Khabarovsk - the Soviet (now Russian) Far East is NOT in Siberia. At least since 1917 geographic "Siberia" has started at the Urals in the west and finsished at the Pacific watershed in the east i.e. all its rivers flow north to the Arctic.
Therefore Kamchatka, Wrangel Island and Central Shikote-Alin are NOT within geographic Siberia. Administrative Siberia ("The Siberian Federal District") is more modern (since the end of USSR) but even smaller! The Russian view is that the "Western view" of Siberia extending all the way to the Pacific is incorrect. Should we not use the Russian view! Or at least make it clear that we are not doing so! |
