After it was picked for the main competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the director, Mohammad Rasoulof, was sentenced by Iran's government to eight years in prison, whipping (flogging), and a fine. He then fled to a safe house in Germany.
The last 30 minutes of the film were shot in the Kharanaq ruins near Yazd. The Kharanaq castle is the main visual highlight, and the nearby Kharanaq Caravanserai, which is part of UNESCO's Persian Caravanserais World Heritage listing, appears in several scenes.
