Hi all,
I'm new to this website & forum, so first of all congratulations to all for making this such a great site!
On possible additional Connections:
Minarets: Obviously this would include Minaret of Jam, but also Qutb Minar (Minaret of Jam was apparently an inspiration to Qutb Minar - "modelled after" may be going too far) and Itchan-Kala (the Kalta-Minor Minaret, which is also on the picture). Obviously all Islamic sites will have minarets, but the point here is that the minaret has become more famous/architecturally important than the adjacent mosque. Maybe there's more such important minarets too (in future I could imagine the minarets of Ghazni, Afghanistan, to at some point become WHS sites too).
Versailles: Out of the 20 "Modelled after" connections, 10 refer to Versailles. Would it make sense to have a separate "Versailles" connection? I understand that such a Connection existed before, but was then transformed into "Modelled after". However, the importance of Versailles as architectural model is so strong that in my opinion it would warrant its own Connection e.g. "Versailles and its emulators".
The Magi/Three Kings: At least 4 sites can be connected to the Magi: Jerusalem (where they met King Herod), Bisotun (where there is an inscription mentioning the Magi, though of course not the Biblical ones), Cologne Cathedral (where their remains are contained in a shrine), Istanbul (the remains were previously kept at Haghia Sophia).
Other sites to add to "Destroyed by invasion": - Minaret of Jam (the city of Firuzkuh where it was located was apparently destroyed by the Mongols) - Hatra (destroyed by the Sassanids in 241) - Assur (destroyed by the Medes in 614 BC) - Merv (destroyed by the Mongols in 1221) - Shakhrisyabz (destroyed by the Emir of Bukhara in the 16th century)
