I noted this Web page reporting that Georgetown wants to spend 10 million Ringgit (c $US 2.7 mill !!) on building an arch to celebrate its inscription as a WHS

Among the comments in the article is
"Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the arch and walls, which will cost about RM 10 million, will be similar to those in other Unesco World Heritage Sites like Quebec in Canada and Li Chiang, China"

I don't know the 2 constructions in Quebec and Lijiang referred to (though I am not surprised by the example of Lijiang which seems to have become a byword for excess in milking its heritage for tourism purposes) but do we know of a 3rd (and more?) Over-the-top (OTT) and probably "inappropriate" commemorations of WHS inscriptions so as to make a "Connection"? Really the more inappropriate, costly and uglier the better in order to bring home the hubristic excesses which often accompany the scheme nowadays! It is somewhat ironic that a scheme intended to preserve "heritage" actually leads in some cases to the degradation of the site via the construction of such overblown memorials. Nb we would not include the rather more tasteful brass plaques which UNESCO "requires" should be placed at the inscribed site

My suggestion would be Harer (Ethiopia) which has a rather ugly gate (photo in my review) with the WHS commemoration in the top left square.

It's not really over the top, but I noticed Luxembourg city to be very proud of it's inscripion. I counted numerous plaques and world heritage indications spread across the city.

I always seem to get a little bit extra by finding these plaques, and feel a little cheated if I can't find one. Tunisa was very good at putting a plaque at the entrance to all the sites (excepct I couldn't find one at El Jem.)

It has almost become a seperate, and somewhat laughable, past-time in finding these plaques. The one at Durdle Door on the Devon and Dorset coastline was very nice, unfortunatly it is somewhat weather beaten now, and Trebic in the Czech Republic was very keen on displaying them practically any building over 40 years old had a plaue on it.
