I have found a third but it is perhaps not quite as "direct" as I would have hoped -ie not actually the site of the suicide.

Thien Mu pagoda is a site within the Hue inscription. It was the home of Thich Quang Duc, one (and perhaps the most famous - he is revered as a Boddhisattva) of a number of buddhist monks who self immolated in the 1960's (1963 in his case) in protest against the US supported S Vietnamese regime and religious oppression. The car he travelled to Saigon in is on show there and an iconic photo of the event shows it behind him standing in the road with its bonnet/hood up as he dies in flames.
There were self immolations in Hue eg the nun Thich Nu Thanh Quang at the Diue de pagoda in 1966 but as far as I can see this is not part of the Hue inscription.
still it is a "connection" with "Famous Suicide"!!

How famous should a "famous suicide" be? Must the suicide have taken place in or in close proximity to the inscribed site as well?

Anyway here are some more:

1. Kyoto (more precisely Uji) - Minamoto no Yorimasa. He killed himself by seppuku in Byodo-in, one of the listed monuments in Uji. His seppuku was the first recorded to have been carried out as an alternative to surrendering to enemies. I guess that must mean a lot at least to the Japanese.

2. Forbidden City in Beijing - Emperor Chongzhen. He was the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty and hanged himself just outside the palace compound as his empire was being conquered. This was after he had ordered almost everyone in his household to commit suicide.

3. Yin Xu - King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty of ancient China. Another ruler who killed himself as his kingdom was being taken over. This one burnt himself along with his palace.

4. Kathmandu - Dipendra. Officially he killed a number of his family members including his father the then king of Nepal before shooting himself. This did not take place within an inscribed site but it still took place in Kathmandu.

5. Auschwitz - Eduard Wirths. He was the chief SS doctor at Auschwitz. He hanged himself but I don't think this was anywhere near Auschwitz.

6. What about Judas Iscariot? I suppose he hanged himself somewhere near Jerusalem?

Thanks quirkasher - the first 3 look good and "famous" enough - but it is up to Els finally to decide! We try to be reasonably strict about Connections having to relate to the inscribed area and look for some sort of confirmatory evidence/documentation either in the inscription documents or on the Web somewhere so the other 3 are too vague/unrelated I fear.

You can also add Lucretia in Rome. She became a symbol of chastity after she preferred committing suicide to living the shame of having been raped.

Are we happy that we can justifiably assume that the actual or mythical house of Collatinus "in Rome" where the rape took place would have been within the inscribed area? As I understand it from the documentation the nomination for the "Historic Centre" included the entire area within the Aurelian Walls - plus numerous later buildings, palaces etc. These walls were built 272-4 and reflected the necessity to extend earlier walls in order to protect a growing Rome. Livy states that Sextus Tarquinius rode from the army camp at Ardea (35kms south of Rome) to Rome itself . Livy wrote about Roman history from its founding in 753 BC to around 9BC. So, whenever the Rape actually/mythically took place, Rome would have been somewhat smaller than at the time of the Aurelian walls.
I guess it seems a reasonable assumption!
In that case of course Britten's Opera "Rape of Lucretia" should also be linked to Rome?

Didn't one of the Swiss Guards kill himself in the Vatican some years ago? I thought that caused quite a scandal. Oh and a Vatican police cadet did too recently didn't he?
