Wonder what you think of museum suggestions like these. I am afraid it will open the flood gates as every museum in the world has some pieces of this or that.

Located at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum:
Hattusha: Yerkapi Sphinx www.istanbularkeoloji.gov.tr/web/30-124-1-1/muze_-_en/collections/ancient_orient_muse um_artifacts/yerkapi_sphinx
Thebes: Tombs http://www.istanbularkeoloji.gov.tr/web/30-120-1-1/muze_-_en/collections/ancient_orie nt_museum_artifacts/egyptian_tomb_finds
Palmyra: Tomb Chamber http://www.istanbularkeoloji.gov.tr/web/27-112-1-1/muze_-_en/collections/archaeologic al_museum_artifacts/palmyran_tomb_chamber
Jerusalem: Siluan Inscription http://www.istanbularkeoloji.gov.tr/web/27-111-1-1/muze_-_en/collections/archaeologic al_museum_artifacts/siloam_inscription
Istanbul: Several, for example http://www.istanbularkeoloji.gov.tr/web/27-115-1-1/muze_-_en/collections/archaeologic al_museum_artifacts/bases_of_the_statues_of_charioteer_porphyrios
Troy: Most findings are exhibited there.

Located at the Naples Archaeological Museum:
Pompeii: Numerous mosaics
Rome: Monumental sculptures from Caracala Baths
Naples: Built atop the wall of Ancient Greek Neapolis

We have the British Museum already ("In the British Museum") but limiting it to only the largest pieces taken from a WHS not every pot or piece of jewellery.
"World Heritage sites from which "non-portable" objects have been removed which are now in the British Museum. "Non portable" is defined as
a. Integral to the structure from which they have been removed
b. Not intended to be moved from the site
c. Of "significant" size and weight"

Most of the items suggested for Istanbul and Naples are equally non-portable aren't they? Although I don't think the last suggestion is relevant ("Naples: Built atop the wall of Ancient Greek Neapolis") since the Wall is nothing to do with an inscribed site.

How many museums around the world are going to have "significant" non- portable objects from 3 or more different WHS? Not that many I would have thought.

The British Museum connection has been around a couple of years now -perhaps it was a bit too restrictive and should allow significant portable objects as well.

We will also have museums like the Cairo Museum which naturally contain articles from numerous WHS belonging to the same country in which it is situated.

It is certainly a matter "of interest" I would have thought where one can see objects taken from a WHS ("In the Istanbul Museum") and the minimum of 3 will cap the possibilities!

I didn't realise we had a British Museum connection, I must admit I always keep an eye out for things from WHS when I potter around every month or so. I will have a look and see if there is anything a little more substantive next time I go.

The one I toyed with was objects represented in the cast court at the Victoria & Albert museum. I am a fairly recent convert to the V&A, having previously found it disjointed and dull. However when I discovered the cast court I was rather impressed. It basically has reproductions of art works and chunks of famous sites from all over Europe. They range from small plaques up to a copy of the whole Portico de Gloria from Santiago de Compestella cathedral (In fact it is actually easier to appreciate the sculptures on the copy than it is on the real thing).

I didn't want to propose it for fear of starting off a glut, but would happily have a trawl around for links.
I make it 23 (25 if you double count the Santiago Pilgrimage routes), ranging from Urnes Stave Church to the Vatican.

I agree with Solivagant that such connections are indeed of interest and that no that many museums may qualify. Such a connection not only tells us where major parts of a WHS are on display but also reveals us historic information as to the history of these national museums, usually closely linked with excavation missions.

I agree the Naples Archaeological Museum doesn't hold water.
I would however suggest looking into several other museums or museum complexes:

The Vatican Museums, The Hermitage, The Louvre, The Museum Island in Berlin, Greek National Museum, Egyptian National Museum and Museum of the Americas in Madrid. Interestingly, the first four as well as the Istanbul Museum are all located within WHSs themselves.

I had a look at several prominent museums and interestingly the only one I came up with making up a connection was the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
The following failed: Louvre - Paris, National Archaeological Museum - Lima, Same - Athens, America Museum - Madrid, National Anthropological Museum - Mexico City, Hermitage - St Petersburg, Vatican Museums - Rome, Castello Sforzesco - Milan, Art History Museum - Vienna, Israel Museum - Jerusalem. The only one I didn't try and is worth trying I think is the Cairo National Museum and maybe the Archaeological Museum of Turin. I'm a bit tired...

I wasn't aware of this - i must visit next time I am in London. Like you I regard the V+A as being full of things I am probably not interested in and shown in a rather old fashioned way - but I am probably the old fashioned one.

This Connection seems as valid as e.g "Replica in Legoland" - at least these are direct casts of the originals!!
