I would like to turn it into a connection, but need more background text to make it interesting.

Can someone with good knowledge of these works by Homerus add some info about what supposedly happened at which WHS?

I guess so and herewith make an opening:

Venice - The Merchant of Venice
Vienna - Measure for Measure
Verona - Romeo and Juliet
Athens - Midsummer Night's Dream
Rome - Julius Caesar
Elsinore - Hamlet

"Mentioned" in the Iliad/Odyssey is perhaps a bit "strong" since many of the locations are legendary. Many a book and PhD has been written hypothesising where the locations actually were - if anywhere!! There are even views that Madeira and the Azores are involved! Wiki states "The view that Odysseus's landfalls are best treated as imaginary places is probably held by the majority of classical scholars today"!

But if we are looking for WHS "believed" by some to be locations referred to in the Odyssey/Iliad then
"The Wandering Rocks" are often held to be the Island of Stromboli -Aeolian Islands (though others propose Sicily generally with the flames etc coming from Etna). Book XII - Circe advises Odysseus that there are 2 possible onward routes :- "One leads to those sheer cliffs which the blessed gods know as the Wandering Rocks ..... for such sailors as bring their ships to the spot there is no escape whatever. They end up as flotsam on the sea, timbers and corpses tossed in confusion by the waves or licked by the tempestuous and destroying flames ". He chooses the other route via Scylla and Charibdys!


There are problems re WHS which were Shakespeare locations too - in particular whether there is anything left which was there in Shakespeare's time and whether the play contains any sense of "place" e.g "Paris - a room at the Palace ? And is "Athens" good enough when only the Acropolis is inscribed . What to do about locations like Pericles, Prince of Tyre - "Tyre -a room in the Palace". The location is really irrelevant and has no sonse of place - but then does Elsinore either?

I suggest the following as being reasonably related to the inscribed site (I haven't bothered with further plays set in locations already mentioned by Assif e.g Titus Andronicus in "Rome -before the Capitol")

Henry IV II Act IV Scene 4 "Westminster -a room at the Palace"
Henry VI Act I Scene I "Westminster Abbey
There are others in Westminster or "The Parliament house" too

Tower of London
Henry VI Act I Scene III "London -before the Gates of the Tower". Scene V "A room in the Tower", - and in other plays also (E.g Richard III)

also, you can also have a connection like "mentioned in the bible". but again, as a slippery slope, we can also have connection for "mentioned in the quran" and the other religious texts.

Yes we can - and as long as we deal with canonic works as the ones suggested above (including the Bible and the Quran) I don't see it as a problem.
As to Homer - we could name the connection 'proposed as a possible location for places referenced in the Iliade and the Odyssey'.

The opportunity is open for anyone who can identfiy other "canonical" religious texts containing references to 3 WHS! Authors might be a bit more of a problem as there may be some real "pot boilers" who just love to set their trashy novels in famous "exotic places" such as WHS. I did wonder whether the recent Indiana Jones movie connection was opening the floodgates - What about Agatha Christie and James Bond books/movies? On books and movies we originally tried to limit matters by insisting on "books by Nobel Prize winning authors" and "Movies of Critical acclaim".

By the way Els - I would restrict the Shakespeare connection to "set in" rather than "mentioned in" and did you deliberately exclude Tyre? I thought that it lacked a "sense of place" but no less than others which you have included?

I think both Agatha Christie and James Bond are good suggestions :)
Nonetheless, I don't think I have the urge to put them through.

It appears that Agatha Christie's books don't yield 3 WHS - I had assumed that, with "Death on the Nile" as a start there would be something from e.g "Murder on The Orient Express" and "Murder in Mesopotamia" - but apparently not. Hercule Poirot never even took his little grey cells to the Grande Place in his home country!! Agatha Christie married an archaeologist but I can't even connect her personally to 3 sites.

James Bond is another matter however with 2 different potential (and overlapping) connection lists -
