I don't want to be too negative but which are the least inspiring sites (less deserving sites) on the list.

I was thinking of posting this one yesterday, so I am glad someone else is thinking on the same lines.

Of the ones that I have visited Le Havre in France and Shockland in Holland have probably been the least inspiring. Although I must admit I have good memories of the days I visited them the sites themselves really didn't endear themselves to me.
The Tower of London is probably the one really big site I feel let down by, it is expensive and busy and on the whole just not very interesting to me. Trebic in the Czech Republic could really have been just any other town, but they had sign posts in the right places and a rebuilt Synagogue, been to plenty of other more remarkable Czech Towns that are not on the list.

Of the ones that I haven't visited the one I find most confusing is the University of Caracas, perhaps if people have been there they can tell me it is great but it really just doesn't seem remarkable in the least. Though I would love to visit just to find out more about the place.

Take care on this one! I get myself into terrible trouble when I criticise a site - Els is tired of handing off outraged people whose very being has been challenged by reading that some beloved site into which they have poured large amounts of emotional capital has been "found wanting"!!
I (partly) joke of course but it does surprise me how emotionally involved people can get in the most ordinary of places and how personally they can take any criticism of them - so please do NOT include Colonia del Sacramento, the Caves of the Slovak Karst or Osun Osogbo in your list (and I didn't even criticise the latter but anything less than 100% adulation is sometimes taken the wrong way) !!
Actually I think it is a good idea and perfectly valid to look at the "50 least justifiable sites on the list" (which, by implication should be replaced by the "Best 50 missing"!) - but it will NOT be without controversy as personal and national pride WILL be hurt!!

Beemster Polder, Hildesheim, Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Temple, Mansion and Cemetery of Confucius, Alto Douro, Peking Man Site and Chongmyo Shrine are among my least inspiring visits.

Like Solivagant with Colonia del Sacramento, the Caves of the Slovak Karst and Osun Osogbo, I've had 'attacks' because of my not so favourable reviews of Evora and Brno.

For me it's Beemster Polder for sure, it looks like the field across from where I live ;-)

White city of TA (although I adore TA as a city), Brno, Sacri Monti (I've only been to one near Como), Regensburg, Kew Gardens, Reichenau.

My personal "deep points" are also Shockland and the Beemster, followed by Le Havre and Lorsch.

The Netherlands must have the most disappointing national list. The only exceptional inscription even on a national level is the Rietveld Schröderhuis, and even that is prehaps a litlle questionable on a "Universal Level".

Yes it is unbelievable when you look at the Capital cities of Europe which ARE on the list that there is nothing in Central Amsterdam - It IS on the T List of course but why hasn't it been pursued? It is clearly "World Class/Unique" (even the Red light area!) Do any of the Dutch members of this forum know??
And Delft/Haarlem are surely as good/better in their way as the numerous mid range towns in other countries which have made it on - Regensburg for instance has already (rightly I think) been nominated for the Least Inspiring list. And is Het Loo any less valid than other inscribed palaces such as Drottningholm?

I can understand why NL rightly has some "Water Management" sites but it has gone overboard!

There's some hope for improvement on the Dutch side:
- nominated for 2009 is the Wadden Sea (joint with Germany, dossier has been submitted last January)
- nominated for 2010 will indeed be Historical Centre of Amsterdam (they've even hired an international WHS consultant to help write the proposal, if I remember well)

Amsterdam City Council missed the nomination deadline again this year. They have been discussing it already for 30 years! Interestingly the nomination is no longer the "Historic Centre of Amsterdam", the medieval centre including the red light district, the Dam with the Town Hall, the new market and Waag, is degraded to a buffer zone! Only the 17th Century Grachten Gordel (Ring of Canals) is included. The new title is something like "city of openness and tolerance". The feeling is that Unesco will probably be unwilling to inscribe another old Western European city simply on architectural and historical grounds - even if it is one of the best preserved, unusual and beautiful cities in Europe and was literally the centre of world for most of the 17th Century.

I think I may be becoming guilty of a bit of Solivagant's feared nationalism and emotion. However; I would definitely support Amsterdam on our list of top missing sites!

I am happy to relieve you of the need to show national favouritism and propose Amsterdam for the Top 50 Missing - I would have got to it when I reached countries beginning with "N" on the T list anyway. I am NOT prepared to propose anything as wishy-washily titled as "City of openness and tolerance" however (Anyway I would have thought that the Red Light district distinctly supported these 2 notions so why remove it!). I won't propose an alternative title like "City of Art, Water and Sex" (or "City of Sophisticated Sleaze" which phrase I always remember being used by 1 hustler!) and am happy to revert to the previous factual title of "Historic Centre". Can someone do the "formal" documentation and criteria please!

I would certainly second (third?) the Amsterdam propossal. If I hadn't returned it may have gone on my most dissapointing sites list. This first time I turned up a backpacker had a morning walking around the centre surrounded by young english speaking tourists disscussing the Bob Marley murals in the cafes and just generally hated the expeireince.
I returned a few years later and spent more time exploring beyond Damrak and loved the place, especially the outer canals and the housing projects, though the liberal air pervading the city centre was also very appealing.
Interestingly as I was on the tram to get back to the airport there was a news report being displayed that it had been put forward to UNESCO for consideration, and that was July 2006.

The Dutch list did provide my most specialised (and most ridiculed) day of travelling Shockland, Ir.D.F. Woudagemaal and Beemster Polder (refered to by my girlfired as 'Those ditches you dragged me to!) there certainly is more to the country than this!

On other matters, I think Brno does deserve a bit of criticism it is not the most appealing city in Moravia, though I would say the Tugendhat Villa is one of my favourite WHS but that is mostly as Mies van der Rohe is something of a hero, but I can understand how it wont appeal to everyone.

A site can of course be uninspiring to see whilst still justifying inscription for its historic or natural importance. The problem is when it isn't that wonderful to see AND seems on the borders of what is justifiable for inscription – I guess my list is mainly of that group as I can't even tell myself that I have seen something REALLY significant/important to make up for the mediocre experience! Many of these places are "worth a visit" if you are passing by and have the time -but then so are 1000s of non inscribed sites around the world.

Madara Rider – 1 bas relief high up on a cliff and hardly distinguishable
Srebarna Nature Reserve – Yes it should be protected as a bird reserve and justifies its position on the Ramsar and World Biosphere Reserve lists but is not "World significant" even for its Pelicans
Pirin – Pleasant temperate mountain scenery but nothing special despite valiant attempts to push the endemic species aspect
Bagherat – Of interest mainly to Bangladeshis?
Vezelay – inscription as part of Route de Compostela would be enough
Muskauer- Is it really that significant or special?
Reichenau – pleasant churches but not that significant surely
Fountains Abbey/Studley Royal – just to show I am not being nationalistic!
Tequila- the towns and scenery from the road at least offer little
Caves of Aggtelek – caves are nothing that special
Medina of Tunis – nothing special as Medinas go
Colonia del Sacramento - there are many far more interesting "colonial" towns in Latin America to see which are NOT inscribed than this one which is.

I'd have to say, that the least inspiring site, that i have seen is the White City of Tel-Aviv. the "melted house" was interesting, but besides that, most of the buildings looked quite ordinary. i see architecture like that ,all the time in my home town.
