During the past decade, we have seen plenty of activity from China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia. In total 28 inscriptions and 3 pending nominations for 2025. Natural WHS total 8 of the 28 (mostly from China). Our community here has rated China's WHS during the past decade the highest, followed by Korea, then Mongolia, and lastly Japan. The trend over the past decade in Japan is modern heritage sites, remote islands, and prehistoric/early historic periods that are serial properties which can sometimes be rewarding (based on reviews), but also not the most impressive WHS in the country. Korea has evolved toward larger, spread out serial nominations focusing on tombs, Confucian Academies, Buddhist Temples, and Tidal Flats. Only the Baekje WHS harkens back to older Korean nominations like Gyeongju, which in form / components is a precursor. China has worked toward inscribing cultural sites with values connected to 'Minority communities' (Tusi Sites, Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art, and the Ancient Tea Plantations of Pu'er). Additionally, China has been uniquely successful with natural sites in the past decade, which stands apart from leading WHS countries (Italy, Germany, France, Spain, India) where successful natural nominations are becoming increasingly rare. The only trend that stands out to me for Mongolian WHS in the past decade and their current pending nomination (Eastern Steppes) is the size, some of these boundaries are the size of small countries.
