As I have written about before, the introduction of the Preliminary Assessment in the nomination process (voluntary up and until 2027) will give us more perspective on which sites are in the pipeline. As I had hoped, they have listed those sites who did request such an assessment in the set of documents for 2024.

The following sites have requested a preliminary assessment before 2024 and thus can be considered to be nominated soon (2027?):

· 15 September (Y1 - 2024) Submit PA
· 1 October (Y2 - 2025) Reply from AB's on PA
· <A minimum of 12 months shall occur between reception of the Preliminary Assessment outcome and the submission of the related Nomination Dossier>
· 1 Feb (Y4 - 2027) Submit Nomination dossier
· WHC (Y5 - 2028) Outcome

Note: an Upstream Process report can be used as a waiver to skip the PA, it will be valid for 5 years (a nomination has to be submitted by then). The Upstream Process is more intensive though, including a site visit.

Els, do you think this report on the Zomin Mountains (Uzbekistan) is indicating a 'preliminary nomination' and therefore scheduled for 2028? Or do you think it means a nomination has been submitted to UNESCO by the February 2025 deadline for 2026? The tentative nomination was only added in October 2024!

I think it is the most likely too. For 2 reasons: the use of the word "Preliminary" in the article + the date of the article. The deadline for the preliminaries is Sept 15, the article was published Oct 4 and uses the past tense.
(it was on the Tentative List before Oct 2024 as well, they only refreshed it and it got a new id)

But for the 2026 & 2027 WHC it will still be a bit of a gamble, as both the old and new routes to nomination can be used.
