Does anyone of you happen to have a list of WHS that are serial nominations? I was going through them 1-by-1, but maybe someone already has done this exercise?

The UNESCO KML file for Google Earth contains details of ALL the individual locations within each inscribed site -but I am no expert on that format and whether/how information can be extracted from it - perhaps Meltwaterfalls could help?

If it contained the UNESCO reference numbers for each site/sub site then, in theory, it could be used to automatically "set up" your own records from it

I am beginning to feel that this is opening a can of worms...

The link to all natural & mixed serial WHS contains also sites that are not marked as serial on the UNESCO website, such as Greater Blue Mountains. It is said to have 2 locations, but the UNESCO website shows none and the AB ev even goes into detail that a serial nomination in the future might be something to look at, but is not for now.

And there are errors on the UNESCO website too, for example Fraser Island is displayed as having 2 locations, but the 2nd (Cooloola) was rejected and is not in core zone

hmm yeah. I just had a look at the excel sheet on the official site and I'm not 100% sure it is that accurate.

I don't understand why all the Finnish ones are in there, or Bath. I'm guessing there are probably others missing.

Scrap that, the above has big holes in it: Third on the list of non serial sites was Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra and a few rows lower was Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh / Naracoorte) Will see if there are any other ways to get it.

In reference to Solivagant's point, the KML file may provide some help but it is all packaged up to make extraction to excel (and thus quick analysis) tough/ impossible. I've tried to crack it before, but perhaps this is a good reason to give it another go.

However- looking at the resultant records, as far as I can see, there only seems to be a single record for each site. So I don't know how Google Earth gets the individual sub-locations. In order to see them of course one (or at least I do!!) has to go through the second stage in Google earth of clicking on "Multiple Locations -Display in Google earth" - but where/when Google Earth goes to get the individual sub-locations i don't really understand!

A solution would be to scrape the maps section of each site on the unesco web site. There is a section "multiple locations" with tabulated data. If there is no other way I can make a tool for you, if I can get some time.

So this is the list of sites that contain the "Multiple Locations -Display in Google earth" There are 353 of them so I have put them in a spreadsheet. I haven't had a chance to do more than just a cursory check of them.

I'm off for a bit but should be able to pick bits up later on.

Fagus Factory is a multiple site with one location on both meltwaterfalls list and on the unesco web site. The data from unesco is therefore not error free.

Leon cathedral is another case.

And Brugge, Flint Mines

I was surprised to see Dubrovnik there but apparently UNESCO consider the island as a separate location.

The problem seems to arise where the UNESCO "Map page" for a site has "Multiple locations" -even where there aren't!!e.g http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1006/multiple=1&unique_number=1174

It has a country column now as well, which maybe of additional help.

Additionally in updating it, I noticed Falun is missing as a serial site.
