I suppose that a "bigger issue" is how many of those sites aren't even on that country's T List?

Assif - your list of 164 sites (to date and counting?!!) is impressive and represents a lot of "knowledge", work and added value. A problem I have is the lack of any easy reference back to the "gap" which each of those sites is/might be regarded as "filling". I have got a bit lost with all the different categories and subcategories acorss Cultural and Natural which have been used across the past year when you started in Feb 2013.The output is scattered across posts on the forum going back over a year!

I wonder if "lists" on this Forum are really the best way of displaying the data- might not a spreadsheet format be better? Els can provide a link to such a spreadsheet if you send it to her so we can all view it.

I would suggest something along the lines of

A row per proposed/potential "gap filling" site as identified by yourself
Then, for each row, columns covering
a. Category - e.g Natural
b. Sub category e.g Habitat
c. Sub sub category e.g Somali-Maasai Savannah
d. Proposed/possible Gap filling site e.g Samburu NP
e. Country
f. T List or not?
g. Date on T List
h. Notes/Comments/Issues

For completeness and ease of reference back to the original lists of Gaps as identified by ICOMOS/IUCN the spreadsheet could include sites which you/we regard as having filled a gap. In which case row f could have 3 possible entries - Inscribed/T List/Not on T List and row g would show the date of inscription.

Row h could be used where to record doubts you might have about whether this actually fills the gap, gaps for which no site seems suitable, which of 2 potential gap fillers is regarded as more suitable etc etc

Such a spreadsheet could be sorted by you/us at will by combinations of category etc/country, filled, unfilled and provides the entire analysis to date in a single location

I was surprised that some of gaps in India were not considered.

Indus valley civilisation-Lothal and Dholavira (represented by Mohenjodaro only)
South Indian Islamic Architecture- Deccan monuments(not at all represented)
Hoyasala Monuments(major gap between 10th century Chola and 16th Century Vijaynagar architecture)
Srirangam and Meenakshi(Best example of Dravian Vaishnav and godess temples architecture)

Though Sompura is included but Nalanda was much larger than it ( ancient university gap)

If you go back to the first and subsequent posts by Assif on this subject he makes it clear that the exercise was to trace progress or otherwise on the "Gaps" as identified by IUCN/ICOMOS in their reports of 2003 (ICOMOS) and 2004 (IUCN)


The issue as to whether those reports missed out other justifiable "Gaps" (e.g as between Chola and Vijayanagar architecture) is a perfectly valid question but wasn't going to be covered in this analysis.

All these sites except Nalanda was included in ICMOS gaps.

Kingdoms in South India; Cholas, Hoysalas, Hindu Vijayanagar Empire-
Hoyasala temples clearly come under this group.
Srirangam temple has also architectural idioms coming from the several royal dynasties Cholas, the Kongu rulers, the Pandyas, the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire.(includes all 3 empire in the list)
Deccan kingdoms also mentioned in the list.

ICMOS did not miss (e.g as between Chola and Vijayanagar architecture). It included Hoyasala dynasty.Assif did not consider my suggestion about Hoyasala and others

Dear kkanekahn, as far as I remember ICOMOS examined India, but did not include it in the gaps mentioned, i.e., it concluded India did not constitute a gap. This is not to say I disagree with you about the need of further Indian sites. Even Bagan was not considered a gap.

Which report are you talking about? I created the list by looking ICMOS gap analysis report provided by you. It also include Bagan city(page no. 56)

Now I see the source of the confusion, kkanekahn.
You refer to the listing of all subcategories which indeed includes occasional gaps. After each of the three sections there is a summary which lists the most significant gaps. For B it is on page 68. South and East Asia are not analyzed there and are barely mentioned.
When I summarised the gaps I only referred to those gaps that appear in the analysis at the end of each section. Of course one could take the category assignment and analyze it independently of the summary. This would mean a much more detailed gap analysis than the one I did.
To be honest, I am a bit tired of reading through this report for the time being. If you want to analyze these "smaller" gaps on the list, it should definitely be interesting. However, you should be aware that the same should be done with all categories, because my gaps did not rely on such analysis and are therefore much less detailed.

Okay, I got your point. Undoubtedly, detailed analysis would make the list much longer.
