We recently discussed the issue of "filling the gaps" and in particular traditional crop production sites as potential new WHS.
In this context, the website of the GIAHS - Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems may be of interest.

They list a lot of traditional agricultural landscapes around the world and also pastoral systems and irrigation and water management. Most of the sites are located in South East Asia. There seems to be a great variation of rice terraces (like Rice-Fish or Rice-Fish-Duck-Systems), but there are also examples for traditional production of tea (China, India), potatoes (South America) or Saffron (Kashmir), and oases in North Africa and Maasai pastoralism in Kenya and Tanzania.
As far as I could see only the Hani Rice Terraces are also a WHS.
An interesting and informative website, and maybe a list of potential new WHS?

I notice among the current and potential GIAHS projects several WHS-related ones in addition to Hani
Ifugao Rice Terraces (Existing) = Philippine Cordilleras
Dutch Polders (Potential) = Schokland/Beemster
Chinampa Agricultural System (Potential) = Mexico City/Xochimilco
Tradit Agric Systems in the Carpathian Region (Potential) = Tokaj (Specifically mentioned in the Detailed Info)

A problem with creating a "Connection" is that some of the "Current GIAHS" are based on a specific project whose area lies outside the WHS boundaries even if its agricultural system also occurs within the WHS inscribed area - and indeed may represent part of the WHS OUV.

We could handle this by requiring that the WHS OUV relates at least in part to the Agricultural System as described on the GIAHS Web site (Summary/Detail) whether that GIAHS is a current or potential project.

Interesting project... I found my pet site with the shiitake mushrooms too (Kunisaki peninsula).

This overall project seems to be sponsored by UNESCO, so maybe it will have spill-over effects on the WHL, as once a country has managed to convince the GIAHS people that it has a worthy agricultural heritage site, it's halway done to prepare a nomination to the WHC.

I like the lemon gardens too - they's surely part of Costa Amalfitana, right?
