It does not work for me either, I will put it on the bug list...
Should work (and has). Bug.

Are there any plans to reinstantiate them some time?
General comment. Reinstantiating sounds like it's just 2 clicks. It actually means reprogram (work). And as such these things are subject to prioritization by me and Els. Things I had to prioritize are performance tuning and security hardening (boring). But there also new features, I have wanted for a long time and that the new website finally allowing me to implement. E.g.: The new image handling is a huge improvement. And yet another major improvement is going live this weekend.

The answer is "Requests have come in to bring back the previous countdown-style checklist, also with a more concise list to simplify updating on a phone or poor internet connections. We intend to offer this as an alternative next to the current visit-style checklist."
Not sure this will actually be simpler. But we will allow you to edit a long country grouped list. If you dont want visits, just keep a single (dummy) visit and enter everything. Me personally, I prefer visits as this is how I add sites and feels way more natural and nicer to store.
Also keep in mind that China has a long WHS list and Turkey has a super long Tentative list. I found, with more and more sites being added, the old format at the end no longer manageable.

As it is stated on the Community Page, we only show active members - those who have logged in at least once during the past year. Before the migration, this threshold was lower (3 years I believe, or even longer).
I think there are multiple reasons from excluding users on inactivity. And note inactivity here means not logging in for a year. The main reasons to me:
* Data protection: If you havent logged in for a year, your consent for having your data shown may not be a given.
* Unfair/Bloat: We create a very bloated list if everyone who was active in the past just stays around forever.
We do have separate user types for retired and deceased, so a Hall of Fame list is still possible (and in the case of Iain you can see this at work)

This is an already known bug, listed a few posts above. There is an option "Show full reviews" just above the reviews that does exactly that. Unfortunately the button does not work at the moment but that will be fixed shortly.
Indeed. I added the button as I was researching a trip and found it annoying to read through 20 pages. But for SEO and CMS it's better to have each review with a dedicated page. So this is the compromise. Not sure why it broke and will fix.

Updating visited WHC sites and by-country-view
Not sure what you are referring to. I programmed the old site and I dont think this ever existed. There were tentative sites and WHS and two checklist forms.
In the visit search, nominated should show WHC nominated sites.

Community rankings are somewhat strange. - Today, for example, Iain Jackson and Luis Filipe Gaspar are both ranked as #7 with different number of visits (916 vs. 891), and Solivagant is ranked next as #8 (should be #9?). - Joel on the Road and nan have the same number of visits (632), but show up as #36 (shown first, unexpectedly), and #35 (shown thereafter).
1) Deceased community members get a honorary position, but are not counted in the active top visitors list. This was a compromise between different views in the community. I can live with that.
* Forever to eternity.
* Active, real, alive humans only.
I think if the WHS count is equal, we use the tent count for ranking.
