Moving this suggestion to its own topic:
Solivagant:
Could it be worthwhile having an exercise to assign a "Category" to each Tentative site. This would enable the 1725 to be examined more easily by type and could throw up some interesting data on the number of "me too" sites of each type and the presence of genuine value and novelty. We could start by using the same Category list as for inscribed sites?

Should we make a separate list for the TWHS, like https://www.worldheritagesite.org/list/categories ?
And/or add them as a separate section to the individual category pages like https://www.worldheritagesite.org/list/category/Ancient+Greece ?
Or provide them with fully separate pages altogether?

I guess it would be nice for there to be a single list which permitted easy comparison of numbers of inscribed sites with numbers of T List sites in each category rather than having 2 separate lists - but that would seem to require more change to your exisiting logic rather than simply cloning what we already have and having 2 separate lists.
Similarly the individual category pages could nicely list all Inscribed sites followed by all T List sites - again to ease comparison, but again - not at the expense of much effort.

The biggest job is to categorise all T List sites. Perhaps best to do this with the minimum "logic" change and take it from there once complete and we see what we have and how interesting/useful. It is just possible I suppose that we might find it worthwhile tweaking the current "Category List" in order to differentiate better when we try to fit T List sites into the existing list of Categories? We need to avoid creating too many new categories though!!

I've just created that one, looks really neat: https://www.worldheritagesite.org/list/category/Viking#

With the introduction texts that have been added, it will be easier than it was a year ago!

I've hardly needed to add categories over the years. There are 64 now, by the way.
The last one was Religion - Jewish for the ShUM sites!

I was going to vote for this solution! I think it provides the best overview for the single category. But still, a separated category page for TWHS would be also needed, with both (WHS categories and TWHS categories) linking to the same pages of the kind of Viking# (have I written something understandable?). Or maybe, more easily (?), just a single page where one can toggle between WHS, THWS, or both. So it would appear something like: Viking 5/1T. Is perhaps this what you had in your mind, Solivagant?

Let's start categorising!!!! :-D

Probably trivial question: do all WHSs have (at least one) category? Also, more generally: it would be nice to have a field showing the country for each site!

Yes they do. The "rules" are that mixed sites can have 2 categories (one for the cultural aspect and one for the natural). For other sites that should really be an exception.

I have wondered if more "exceptions " might be required as T List sites are less well focussed than inscribed ones.... I have just looked at "South of Ricaurte Province " (Colombia)....here is it's description on this site
"South of Ricaurte Province is a mixed region where fossils, archaelogical sites and colonial heritage can be found. It includes Villa de Leyva, one of Colombia's best preserved colonial towns. Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is centered around (sacred) Lake Iguaque."
What category?? If ever brought forward it will surely be knocked Into shape... or maybe none of the category items will justify nomination?
But agree that we should try to avoid (and highlight for discussion?) Multiple categories beyond 1 cultural and 1 natural.

Have made a start with UK!
How do you want the results presented Els? Best to do a country at a time??
UK took me around 15 minutes for 8 sites. None of the 3 Natural sites was simple. I changed view on "Flow Country" and had to check Turks & Caicos and St Helena. "Diverse Ecosystems" is a last resort "catch all" for all Natural sites! If we get too many we could consider breaking up such Categories later?? If the T List profile is similar to that for inscribed sites (Will it be??) then we should expect around 1.5 as many sites in each category. But if any particular category grows way beyond this is it may justify looking at?

Chatham Dockyard and its Defences – Milit and Fortifs
Creswell Crags – Human Evol
Darwin's Landscape Laboratory - Residence
Flow Country – Rivers & Lakes
Island of St Helena – Diverse Ecosystems
Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof - Arch site Prehist
The Twin Monastery of Wearmouth Jarrow - Christian
Turks and Caicos Islands – Marine & Coastal

Yemen threw up a few problems which I suspect we will come acorss looking at T Lists. Some sites are just a mess because they have never faced the fire of having to develop a nomination!
Sharma/Jethmun coastal area is on the T list as a "Natural site" but most of the description is of its historic town and archaeological site!! I have ignored these and categorised it for its Sea Turtles which are mentioned en passant!
Jabal Bura a& Jabal Haraz are on the T List as "Mixed sites". But what is described for each is a Continuing CL with nothing of note beyond that for any natural values per se. I suggest we just ignore the Natural aspect.

Archaeological site of Marib - Arch Site Near Eastern
Balhaf/Burum coastal area - Mixed / Cult - Arch site Nr Eastern. / Natural – Marine & Coast

Have moved on to Uzbekistan and run into some problems..... which apply equally to the categories already assigned to inscribed WHS.
a. Mausolea - there are a lot!! I see that the Kazakh "Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi" has been assigned 2 categories -
"Religious Structure - Islamic" AND "Secular Structure Burial"
We haven't adopted a standard practice in this area so - "Early Christian Necropolis Pecs" is ONLY "Secular Structure Burial"
The "Tomb of Askia" is BOTH "Archaeological site - Civilizations of Sub-Saharan Africa" AND "Secular structure - Burial"
The Taj Mahal is ONLY "Secular structure Burial"
The Tombs of Buganda Kings are BOTH "Religious structure - Indigenous" AND "Secular structure - Burial"
How should we handle Tombs and Mausolea?? It is difficult ro see how a structure can be both "Secular" and "Religious". But when does a tomb become "Religious" .....
Taj Mahal......? Doubtful (though some praying does go on)
Koja Ahmed....? It is a place of religious pilgrimage altohugh it has been "secular" in Soviet times. The Christian Necropolis of Pec is secualr now I guess (though some Christians might pray there) In my view ALL Islamic Mauolea were built as Religious Structures. Skogskyrkogarden is what????
Q- How should we categorise "burial places" since such places may or may not be "religious" structures - or only marginally so? Do we count them ALL as "burial places" (and remove the word "secular"?) and only also categorise them as "Religious" if still currently so... or not at all?

b. Geographic Landscapes
We have "Urban Landscape - Arabic and Middle Eastern" and "Urban Landscape - Asian"
The "Stan" sites of Bukhara, Samarkand and Kiva are all assigned to the latter but Shahkrisabz is assigned to the former!! And we have to decide for e.g Andijon. Where does "Arabic and Middle Eastern" end and "Asian" start!!!
Q -How should we handle WHS in Central Asia - count them as Arabic/Middle Eastern, "Asian" or introduce a new category of "Central Asian" or ..............? The problem is that, ocne we start having a geographic split for "Urban Landscape we get dragged into the geographic issue. Here is the current list of them (with current numbers)
African 10, Arabic and Middle Eastern 26, Asian 20, Colonial 47, Latin American 4, Maritime 14, Medieval European 47, Post-medieval European 42, Urban continuity 35
245 in all - so some sort of split is required? But what?
"Urban continuity" seems to be used for any area if the town has a long occupation - but many don't really stand up to detailed analysis!!! Is "Samarkand" any less an example of "Urban Continuity" than say Algiers Kasbah or Segovia or even Istanbul??

I'd say Archaeology, because of the focus on the structures in most of the official description. Wiki says that the sites have been abandoned since the 19C, although "These sites are now only visited for ceremonial purposes, ...", so continuing CL would be too much. Relict CL is also a possibility because of the "traditional land-use practices".

At least it would be a unique nomination! A shipwreck. Hmm. What about "Transport and Trade" or "Military and Fortifications"? Depending on whether you value the passenger function or the war role higher.
