I think for those interested it is a good opportunity to visit St Kilda as there may be good numbers to get a private boat out there.
I guess you would be looking at about
four days return from whatever your point of departure (if you factor in a one day contingency for the weather).
Driving time to the port on Skye is about 6.5-7 hours from Edinburgh, 6 from Glasgow or about 3.5-4 from the nearest international airport? in Inverness. Sailing time is four hours each way.
This site has details of the tripgotostkilda:
Time: 6:50am for 7:00am departure - 8:30pm return (After 5th September 6.30am - 8pm)
Departs from:
Stein Jetty, Isle of Skye.
Operates: April - September
Each trip can take up to
12 passengers.
The
2018 price for the day trip from Stein, Skye is
£260per person.
Mobility: Passengers require to be independently mobile with a reasonable degree of agility. Unfortunately the trip is not suitable for wheelchair users. National Trust for Scotland prohibit all cabin boats (including our boat) from berthing at the St Kilda, Hirta pier. The short transfer to the pier is by Zodiac dinghy/tender.
Age: Children under 16 accompanied by an adult are welcome. Not recommended for children under age of 12.
Dress required: Footwear suitable for walking on the island where ground can be uneven, steep and wet underfoot. Warm waterproof clothing (jacket, trousers and footwear) for use on the island and also to enjoy views from the rear deck during the journey, which is often wet from sea spray.
Food and drink: Passengers require to bring their own food and drink as there are no catering facilities on the island.
Pets: Pets are strictly prohibited due to fragile ecosystem on the island. (
Sorry Schnitzel!)
I wouldn't join for the St Kilda portion of the meet up, it isn't a priority for me to visit and the time and money involved put me off.
But please don't let that stop others from arranging it, it could be a good opportunity for those interested.
If there was a meet up in Edinburgh I'm sure I would be up for joining.
As ever
I would prefer to visit somewhere new, but there are worse things to do than a revisit to one of Europe's lovelier cities.
Missing August would be a wise idea logistically,
though a visit to Edinburgh during the festival is thoroughly recommended, it is just more expensive and it would limit last minute accommodation hunting.
I don't think the usual early weekend in September would be that bad for a visit to Scotland, however June/ July would give you more daylight.
