I have pondered recently if reviewing former tentative sites has any value. If it was just for the sake of reviewing a site, I determined the answer was no. However, in the context of discussing how this former nomination could potentially evolve and not only be re-nominated, but reach inscription, I felt the answer was yes.

That is a good strategy, winterkjm. I only opened the FTWHS for reviews recently, but am not looking for heaps of short reviews of mediocre places. The FTWHS should still be 'alive' on the road to WH status somehow.

Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau NHP (USA) to 'Heritage of the Hawaiian Kingdom'

This is an interesting one, and I wonder what could be part of this potential serial nomination? Could it be Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site?

Looking forward to your reviews!

Yeah, I visited around 20 of the former US tentative sites and it really would not be worth the time to review more than a handful. I picked only two that I am more passionate about and would love to one day see put forward again, albeit in a different form than it was previously. In another review for a former tentative site in Denmark, I just felt (with its dwindling tentative list), Denmark still has 1-2 worthy WHS that are fairly traditional, as compared to its recent / upcoming nominations focused on fossils, geology, and transnational themes. I don't think countries should simply fall into a mindset that ICOMOS or IUCN will never accept a nomination because it runs counter to current trends; either it has OUV or not.

I keep these reviews shorter than my average reviews for a WHS or TWHS and almost exclusively focus on re-imagining the nomination.

Not sure my reviews keep these former nominations 'alive' per say, but perhaps to some degree highlight their potential. Of these, my re-imagination of Trinity College (Dublin) is perhaps the most far-fetched, but I do think it would make an excellent WHS as part of a serial property! The Mojave Desert will always hold a special place in my heart. Does anyone else think Rosenborg is a far more worthy candidate than Amalienborg (currently at 38% by our fellow users)?

Yes and a little more, I just think a Hawaiian cultural WHS that we can actually visit would be a strong addition to the World Heritage List. This article (November 2024) at least proposed the idea of a loose collection of Hawaiian cultural sites for world heritage status and certainly got me thinking.

Rosenborg Castle (Denmark)
The Historic City of Dublin (Ireland)
Joshua Tree National Park (USA)
Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau NHP (USA)

I have no other plans for additional former nomination reviews, but never say never. Ireland's Tentative List update was a reminder that some strong candidates can be abandoned and you can only hope a few make it back on the next tentative list update.

FYI
Due to the upcoming transition to the new system, I have published this week's new reviews more quickly than usual.
So we can start clean and fresh in the new setup.

Things to note when you have written a review in the past week or plan to do so today:
1. The multi-picture (4-in-1, etc.) options don't look as good in the new layout. Consider changing it into a single, landscape-oriented (horizontal) picture (you can just upload a replacement - it may not show directly because of caching, but it will be there (clean your browser cache via the browser setting if you want to see it with your own eyes). .
2. Reviews without pictures are discouraged in general - it's 2025, everybody has 65 pictures of their cat/child and another dozen of everything they've eaten over the past month on their phone, so you must be able to find one that represents your visit to a WHS.
3. Not all reviews are featured first on the homepage anymore. There are just so many, leading up to a backlog of over 3 weeks. For the homepage, a selection will be made based on relevance (does it add something to the existing review set, does it cover a site that has not been reviewed lately), quality and presence of a representative photo. All others are added directly to the site page.

NOTE: the above at #1 doesn't apply to older reviews; if you consider changing pictures in those, wait til the new version of the website is live. It has much better image management functionality, allows uploads per picture up to 10 MB (is 2 MB now) and allows multiple pictures with one review.

Just a reminder about the handling of newly posted reviews on the new website:
- When your new review has been approved by me, it will directly show on your user profile page and the site page.
- I fill the set of 4 reviews on the homepage once a day (this is done by scheduling for the next day). So generally it will show there the next day, unless it is very busy.
- For those who have missed a few days of following the newly posted reviews (the turnaround may be quick, depending on the supply): you can read them all at https://www.worldheritagesite.org/reviews/ (ordered chronologically, youngest first).
