@winterkjm & @csarica
Thanks .....it was too long of course, as are all my reviews (!) but I am pleased if you got something out of it and enjoyed the newsreels. Writing it helped me not only to discover a lot more about the March (as well as to relive that day!) but also to place it better within the Civil Rights events of the '50s, '60s and thereafter. I do hope that the Lorraine Motel gets added from the beginning. In some respects it is unfortunate to have the Nomination "tailed" by such terrible event but in a way that tells the "truth" about the period - it certainly made progress but didn't "end" in a "success" in the same way as other "Sites of Memory" can be presented (e.g End of Apartheid, Independence of India). Indeed the "struggle" continued and continues....

I also have to join the choir and thank you for the review! It was not too long at all, I read it in one breath :-)

It gave me a strong impression of those events. It also highlights how delicate such a nomination is with its tension between great historical significance but more or less only "associative" OUV...

Same here: Great review @Paul. It's also nice that you provide a historic perspective in changes on travel.

For me, the Lincoln Memorial makes the nomination stronger as it truly is one of democracy great places with a long history of (mostly) peaceful protest in the heart of the USA. It also has the benefit that I have visited and would get a tick :D

Generally, wondering how segregation felt to you at the time? There are stories from WW2 where the US army brought race tension to the UK and the British pubs simply didnt comply.

First also a big thank from my side to @Solivagant: Really a very interesting and inspiring review, not to long at all, even not for me who is not mother-tongue english.
But also thanks to @winterkjm and @csarica: Without pointing it out here, I wouldn't have read the review because normally I don't read reviews about TWHS in countries I'm not planing to go in the next year.

A bit late to add on, but Solivagant's review of the Lincoln Memorial with his personal experiences of the March on Washington was fascinating -- what an experience! Listening to Mahalia Jackson and Marian Anderson must have been amazing, and I hadn't heard Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan's Only a Pawn in Their Game before. A lot has changed in the US since the 1960's, but Solivagant rightly notes that the struggle still continues, as is evidenced by Black Lives Matter Plaza, across Lafayette Square from the White House.

Also, I've referenced it in the USA thread, but for anyone interested in an easily accessible overview of the US Civil Rights movement, I highly recommend civil rights leader John Lewis' autobiographical graphic novel series March.

Shoutout to Jgriffindor6 for some nice reviews of the United States and East Asia. Always good to see another American reviewer, and one that appreciates natural World Heritage Sites (something the US is very blessed with)! Good luck on building up those cultural site numbers. The US Southwest has some fantastic ones, and there are a couple World Heritage Site hotspots on the East Coast, too. Without leaving North America, I can highly recommend the Mexico City hotspot for more great cultural sites. Happy travels!

Hi Colvin! Thanks for the shoutout! I've been looking for a way to track my world heritage site visits for a while and I am so happy to have found an active community built around the subject. You guys are on top of it! It looks like next year a trip to Italy is in the forecast so I will definitely get my cultural numbers UP haha.

We could use some new reviews! So use that Christmas Holiday period to your advantage and write some about your 2024 visits....

Sometimes as travelers we experience serendipity as everything aligns, I certainly felt such a feeling in Barcelona. An evening at the Palace of Catalan Music was a special highlight of 2024 and in no small way NPR Tiny Desk Concerts enhanced our experience. May we all have serendipitous travels for 2025!

That was a great review of truly getting to experience the Palau, winterkjm!

I really liked GabLabCebu's comprehensive review of the Canadian Rockies today, too. Always great to hear that folks have had a memorable experience in such beautiful mountains!

I have pondered recently if reviewing former tentative sites has any value. If it was just for the sake of reviewing a site, I determined the answer was no. However, in the context of discussing how this former nomination could potentially evolve and not only be re-nominated, but reach inscription, I felt the answer was yes. So, I chose specifically sites that I saw potential OUV, but would benefit from a re-imagining and often expansion of what was originally presented. These FTWHS reviews will be posted throughout February.

Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau NHP (USA) to 'Heritage of the Hawaiian Kingdom'
The Historic City of Dublin (Ireland) to 'The Ancient Universities of the British Isles'
Rosenborg Castle (Denmark) to 'Dutch Renaissance Castles of Denmark'
Joshua Tree National Park (USA) to 'Mojave and Colorado Deserts'

I like that idea, and look forward to your reviews.
