Some technical changes & maintenance

As I wrote earlier this week on the "WHS Map" post, I have migrated the website to a newer/better server at my hosting provider.
Although it unfortunately still does not perform fast enough to run the maps dynamically (we'll discuss more on that at the map forum post), it allowed me to do some other changes:

- About 95% of the pages will now be shown dynamically. This means that if you change something in a review, it will be visible on the page immediately without me having to push some button. Completely new reviews still will be monitored, but that's more because of anti-spamming & orchestrating the flow of new reviews shown on the homepage.
- This also means that URL's of sites have changed. So for example Aachen is now http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/site.php?id=3 instead of http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/aachencathedral.html. It will take a few days / weeks for Google etc to pick up on this, but I will slowly remove the old pages and not refresh them anymore. Any existing internal links I will change to the new format.
- The advantage of having (almost) only dynamic pages for me as administrator is that most things will run itself and I have to do less. The downside is that we're much more dependable on a working database: if the database server is down for some reason, the site contents will not show. This might happen once a year or so, or whenever I make a mistake with a bad script like I did yesterday (twice).

I also did some small maintenance work, such as:
- fixing the links to the WHS in the Timeline.page
- bring back the overall ranking of visited sites ( http://www.worldheritagesite.org/allvsitesa.html ), in combination with the ranking per continent
- change the text next to the checkbox at the bottom of the page where you can change your reviews - the accompanying text was ambiguous, so you might have chosen the wrong option and the review would be "deleted" (disabled actually, it will still be there only it is not shown on the live pages).

If you have any other small technical annoyances or errors, let me know here in reply to this post or via e-mail. I am still working on this so I can probably solve them easily while I am at it.

A few forum related requests:
* Links to the forum should go to the last (current) page from the main page.
* In the forum some entries break the width.
* I would increase the entries per page in the forum. Seems rather short.

Re name of the pages:
* With most webservers you can rewrite URLs automatically.

I noticed when I tried to change/delete older reviews this showed up. However, I was still able to make edits.

Thanks, winterkjm. I will look into it.

The site is still experiencing performanceproblems due to the migration (there was a move to newer php-software too, and then suddenly some things don't work anymore as they used too). The support desk of the hosting provider is helping with that.

Having finally gotten around to writing up some of my review back log can I just say this is a really good improvement. My spelling and grammar are dreadful so being able to read back the reviews and amend it in real time is really beneficial. Thanks Els, hope you are enjoying Iran.

You're welcome. I'm already in my final days in Iran! In the coming days I will post the first Iran WHS report.

Due to some mistake on my side, or malpractice by someone from the outside, the 3 most recent reviews have been deleted from the website!

I am sorry, but I can't bring them back.
So Nan, Solivagant and Jay T -> if you still have a copy, could you post those 3 again (Lecce, Bisotun, New Lanark)?

Done for Bisotun

A problem I have noticed recently - the first couple of times I ignored it but it it seems to be happening all the time
a. I put up a review
b. I select that I have a photo to upload
c. I go to the review to doe the photo selection from my files
d PROBLEM - no review!!
e. I go to the review and find that it is "set" to be "disabled" so can't be found on my selection list for adding a photo
f. But I haven't selected that!!
g. I "undisable" it and upload photo - everything ok
h. Next review - repeat from a.

Do you use the "Add a new review" from your login page at stage a?

Or do you add a review via the site page (such as http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/site.php?id=1222#review), and then "Add your own review"?

I just looked, the list is not determined by whether the review is disabled or not. It just shows all. Only the order seem a bit illogical, it's by site name, I could change it so you see the last review first.

Perhpas I didn't explain it very well -the question is why are all my reviews apparently being set INITIALLY to "disabled" (and they ARE!) when I haven't set them to be so and don't get a chance to uncheck it when adding a new review -only when I go back to "amend"?

OK, I get it now. I've changed the default to 'OK'. It will only work though for subscribed users adding reviews via http://www.worldheritagesite.org/community/login.php.

If you use the 'entrance' via the site page (such as http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/site.php?id=1222#review) and then use the link at the bottom of the page, the review still will be initially disabled. So I can monitor what unsubscribed users are adding (that's the option most prone to spamming, although it does not happen often - unfortunately it did today).

I still don't really understand. Reviews submitted through the "Community login" (forget the other method of posting - it isn't relevant for this issue) have always gone through a "vet" by yourself before appearing. That didn't seem to be the same as them being "disabled" and this hadn't prevented them being seen on the display for adding a photo. "Something" had changed recently from the procedure operating for many years in this respect!

Done -- thanks for the heads up, Els! I'm kind of amused in light of the recent discussion on Lecce:

elsslots:
In your Lecce review, you state "a fellow traveler had posted a raving review on this site a while ago; the review is now gone".

nfmungard:
I am reasonably certain that I read a review on Lecce. Somewhere. It was part of the reason of me going. Maybe I am growing old :/

Could it be that this website just isn't ready for reviews of Lecce? :-)

Tried again. Created a backup. Just in case Lecce goes away again. :)
