nfmungard:
* Connections

Maybe we can kick this one off with the Art and Architecture Connections

So, if you have a photo to share from one of the WHS listed in these, that shows the specific feature (Art Deco, a Conical roof etc) and is different from the current main WHS site photo, send it to me.

General requirements apply: full-size - landscape (horizontal)

The new website is looking great! I'm working on replacing my existing vertical/portrait photos with horizontal/landscape photos. To ensure these new photos best fit, is there a particular landscape photo ratio (height/width) you recommend?

Thanks Colvin!

There is no fixed answer to this; 4:3 for normal use within your review is fine. If you want to use it as a banner, 16:9 or 3:1 is better.
But on the other hand, I have seen good results in the banner also when you have a wide view of a landscape, or a picture with a certain kind of pattern. Only a single monument in full view usually does not work well.

You can, by the way, also upload vertical-oriented pictures in your reviews, as long as you don't use them as the 'Featured Image', which is intended for the banner. And you have to align them to the right or left.

Thanks, Els! Is there a way to choose the banner on my User Page?

Yes. You set the featured image on your UserPage. It's linked in the menu.

You have space for 2 'personal' pictures:
1. is in Edit your Account
2. is in Edit your Profile

The one in Edit your Profile, 'Featured Image' is intended as the banner photo. In my profile, it is the one from Shiretoko. But if you have not set the first one, it takes the other position first. You might need to play around a bit with these 2 options.

Thanks -- I set my profile picture again under my account, and then replaced the featured image in my profile with a banner photo, and it worked. Appreciate the assistance!

I have also put a first version of the Photo F..A.Q. live, to clarify how things should work and known issues that are on our backlog.

Thanks to Colvin, kintante, warwass, Roman and EvaK for sharing and uploading loads of "missing" photos for (T)WHS over the past days!

If you have more to fill the remaining purple blocks in the overview pages, just upload them via Images in your user menu and I will find them.

Looking for a photo of a Golden Jackal (the Eurasian species) to show with the new connection.
Taken at a WHS of course! The list of connected sites is long, so maybe you have crossed paths with one.

If you have a photo to share, please upload it via Images.

UPDATE: got one already!

Next project: the Ecology section of the Connections.

I am looking for pictures showing the subject at a WHS – so maybe an African Wild Dog in the Okavango Delta, or an Albatross at the Galapagos.
A fair number have been done already, so Chimpanzee habitat is showing a Chimp, etc., but the following still need one:
· Anchialine Habitats (very specific, maybe someone has been to Yongcheon Lava Tube Lake?)
· Cambrian Explosion (Burgess Shale?)
· Cave-dwelling fauna
· Desman (good luck)
· Fish
· Gray Wolf
· Ice Cave
· Lava Lakes
· Lazarus species (again: good luck!)
· Living fossils
· Mammoths
· Notable Extremophiles
· Pangolin
· Permafrost mounds
· Salamanders
· Snow leopards
· Taiga
· Tiger habitat
