I'm doing an interview for a publication, and one of the questions they asked was about hotels which were world heritage sites.

While I'm sure there are some in the city level WHS (Paris, Prague, Budapest, Istanbul) I was wondering if there were any specific hotels which were listed.

One of the few I could think of is the Cinema Hotel in Tel Aviv. Can anyone think of any others?

You obviously have the connections. There is one with hotels:

We should also one saying you can sleep in the WHS... But neither Le Corbusier (Marseille, Iain was planning on staying in there) or Santa Guadalupe (http://www.hospederiaguadalupe.es/) have a connection for this.

@Els: Do we need a new connection? Sleepable? :D

These are those that come to mind : La Saline Royale (Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans); Haeinsa Temple Stay (Haeinsa); Bukchondaek House (Hahoe); Poblet Dormitory and Hotel (Poblet Monastery); Santiago de Compostela posada and several heritage hotels along the route in Spain and France (Santiago de Compostela and Route); there's a decorated farmhouse in Sweden; several Posadas in Portugal (Evora; Elvas; Angra do Heroismo Fort; etc.); then there are those with a view or alone in the buffer zone (Oberoi hotels in India); Belmond Sanctuary Lodge in Macchu Picchu; etc.

Nope. You sleep outside the decorated farm house. The decorated farm houses were only intended to entertain visitors. The main building where the rooms are is not part of the WHS. Still nice and recommended.

Plenty of WHS cities will have hotels in the core zone, so no point in reviewing all of these. Same applies to most pilgrimage sites.

A few special ones that come to my mind:
* Rheintal should have plenty hostels/hotels in the castles along the Rhine.
* Premier Inn Liverpool -> Albert Docks
* Bauhaus -> I think Ian slept in the dormitory.
* Wartburg
* Malbork

How about paradors and pousadas? There are so many wonderful ones in Spain and Portugal core-zones. The old convent-palacio next to the Temple of Diana and the Cathedral in Evora is a pousada. But what about any paradors or hôtels on the Chemins in Spain and France, too?

This won't count, but wasn't the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo originally included, as a specific property, in the pending(?) Frank Lloyd Wright buildings WHS, but later removed?

We spent 3 great nights in the Palazzo Valmarana Braga in Vicenza. The best part was closing and locking the huge door each evening!

Not a chain normally associated with something "special" but I will keep it in mind for future visits.

In a similar vain there is an Ibis Styles in le Havre which is decorated like an original 50's Perret influenced flat. Probably a good way to stay in the city and get a feel for the OUV, though my standards could be low as my previous accommodation in the city was sleeping on the window sill of the ferry terminal.

Just to add to the list (and certainly to the notable hotels connection) is the Gran Hotel in Mexico City, a highlight of the area around the Zocalo, worth popping in to see the stained glass ceiling.

And across the city one that certainly doesn't count, but is complimentary is the Camino Real Polanco, which perhaps best shows the influence of Luis Barragan on Mexican architecture and design.

I believe you can stay in Durham Castle in Durham, although not strictly a hotel it is a WHS "in its own right" along with the cathedral. However, my brother and I chose the Radisson Blu across the river for our stay there on the way down from Edinburgh.
