Landing on Sceilg Mhichíl

Be aware that the increased profile arising from its "starring role" in Star Wars means that getting a place on a boat to land on Sceilg Mhichíl has become very difficult!
I had enquired back in Jan 2016 about when the optimum weather for taking a boat trip might be (i.e the least chance of a cancellation) and was told that the second half of July was statistically best. I was aware of the need to book but, not being the slightest bit interested in Star Wars, had failed to foresee the impact of popular culture on the numbers wanting to visit! Thus, when I tried to book in Mid May, it was only to discover that the boats were already fully booked until late August. Trips around the islands are available but these are hardly going to satisfy World Heritage travellers!

Wow, I had feared that may be the case. A decade ago I was able to book up the week before for a visit over a May Bank Holiday, so things have changed a fair bit.

Yep a landing is a must, just sailing around doesn't really get to the heart of what is special about the site, which is essentially the ascent and arrival at the monastery.

Incidentally it does look rather magnificent in the the latest Star Wars (and the upcoming episode 8 will also feature it), so I can fully understand why people are wanting to go there, and I can imagine it having quite a long lasting impact. They do seem to have recreated the full enclosure for additional filming in Kerry. Perhaps a future visit to this ersatz monastery will be the best we can hope for.

Future visitors to Dubrovnik may also have a fair few more Star Wars fans to content with as well, as it will also feature in Episode 8.

Dubrovnik has also been "starring" in Game of Thrones for a few years now, so there will be fans of that show/series to contend with, along with the even larger Star Wars fandom.

That's a real pity although this year's late "opening" might have made it even more difficult to book. So don't lose hope ;) The fact that only a few passengers are allowed to land per day and only on small fishing boats should help prevent having crowds (even though the obvious tradeoff is that when there is high demand, booking a spot gets even more complicated). Sceilig Michel was one of my best WH travel experiences and I sincerely hope things don't change that much on the island itself because of Star Wars.
