We've moved Nan's files & tables to my server, and the map now connects to the full database.

View it here: http://www.worldheritagesite.org/map/

Please use this topic only to discuss the data behind the maps.
For example: which sites or locations are wrongly positioned on the map?

There's something wrong with the total number of sites included:
- On the "All" view, it says that there are 1032 (1 too many)
- On my count for example, it shows 585 visited sites while I have 586 (1 less)

>> The delisted sites in Oman and Germany are still showing, this is a query thing that can easily be solved (so that makes -2)
>> One other site is missing! Found which one it is: Jesuit Missions of the Guarani (Arg/Bra)

- Sundarbans NP
- Manas
(all drifted southwards into the ocean)

Some sites are wrongly placed near the equator, just checked Europe/North America. Here the correct coordinates from the Unesco website:

1298;Stoclet House;50.83500;4.41611
157;SGang Gwaay;52.09500;-131.22028
162;Amiens Cathedral;49.89500;2.30167
83;Palace and Park of Versailles;48.80500;2.11944
828;Historic Centre of Urbino;43.72500;12.63331
100;Durmitor National Park;43.13300;19.01658
206;Central Zone of the Town of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores;38.65500;-27.22000
1179;Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona;46.91667;9.25000

There is only one site of the Struve Geodetic Arc (Hammerfest, Norway, 1 of 34), but it's linked with Russia.

All sites listed before are corrected.

Please note:
* Use the update statement contained in the site popup going forward.
* To see all locations you need to set the zoom mode to all in options. By default these are hidden.

Pico is called "Part 1 Portugal"
Similarly Namhansanseong is just titled "Part 1"

I have refreshed etc but Swiss Tectonic is appearing a few kms SE of Tours in France despite comment above that it has been corrected

Great to see the map up again - but I have already noticed a few mistakes.
And some of them have been notified previously -e'g by Hubert above! Do we know the "date" of the last update to the data? Was everything which had been "notified" thought to have been corrected? Or is it easier just to take the data "as is" NOW and correct from there even if already notified?

There are still a number of sites suffering the "Gulf of Guinea syndrome" by which they appear in the middle of the sea or on the same latitude somewhere in Africa - we know that this is because of some "null" entry". It is strange that some were notified by Hubert but remain uncorrected whilst others he notified have been changed - Anyway here are the "still incorrect" ones from his list
1298;Stoclet House;50.83500;4.41611
162;Amiens Cathedral;49.89500;2.30167
83;Palace and Park of Versailles;48.80500;2.11944
828;Historic Centre of Urbino;43.72500;12.63331
To which should be added
1225;Loropeni;10.2500;-3.5832
79;W Niger;12.1030;2.8828
( as far as I can see ALL of the above are approximately correct on UNESCO so I don't see how they became "incorrect" on our spreadsheet! As I remember it, we try to keep a column for each of "our data" and "UNESCO data" to help identify differences in the future).

I have also noticed one error in the UNESCO data
Fin Garden (3 of 9 in Persian Gardens) is incorrectly located
It should be
1372;Persian Garden (Fin);33.9462;51.3725
ELS
I think it would be helpful to restate the preferred format for notifying data changes - I am not quite sure for instance how to notify location 3 of 9 for Fin.
Also an "update process" - do you want to update each and every change or to have a "Version" system etc etc?

I will try and download an Excel-version of the data we currently have. We can work on this, and meltwaterfalls might be able to use it too in his map.

The map again seems to slow down the rest of the website, so I have disabled it for a moment. Maybe I can give it its own database, so that it at least does not affect the rest.

Hello, everyone!

I wanted to congratulate you all for the job done with the map. I only have one observation. It is about the Talamanca Ranges-La Amistad Reserves/La Amistad National Park. The matter is that the map of the site has been finally uploaded to the page of the site...and I confirmed that is technically a serial site. It not only includes other parks and reserves on the Costa Rican side of the border, but some are disjunt from the biggest part. For reference, use this map from the National System of Protected Areas and its terminology http://www.inbio.ac.cr/es/biod/24agostoDia.P.N./mapa-ASP.jpg
The main transboundary element (La Amistad International Park, P18 in the map) is of course contiguous, in this case with the Chirripó National Park (P17), Las Tablas reserva (Z03), and Río Macho forest reserve (R07). So, no problem with that.
The two disjunt elements in the WHS are: the Hitoy-Cerere wildlife refuge (B06) to the northeast of La Amistad, and Barbilla National Park (P19), to the north of Chirripó NP. They act as serial elements of the overall site, and I hope that you can map them.
If you need any help to map it, please contact me on my email on my profile and I could lend a hand.

I am doing the exact same thing since years in my world Atlas. Now I can finally mark the caves of the Iberian Peninsula.
However, regarding the Tentative sites, there are still many missing. Germany, NZ etc. I know that many sites e.g. "Peasant culture in Hungary" are not very precise, but at least one example should be marked. How can others contribute to the Map.
I actually planned to implemnent s.th similar in wikipedia. Is it possible to combine the data for Wikipedia as well?

Can you remind me how or whether there is a way to see the visited sites per user? nfmungard was working on that but the old links in the forum are no longer working. Cheers.

There are still a lot of Tentative sites missing on the map.
e.g all the new German nominations, but also newer ones.
Is it possible to have map overlays with the realboundaries instead of only colorful dots on the map?

Hi Jakob,

Yep, the map at the top of the home page is missing a lot of tentative sites, mostly because the data isn't really available for many of them in a usable format. I did go through and slowly create some of it (I did the new German T-list sites). Unfortunately my laptop and its back up were stolen, so I have sort of lost the impetus to redo it at the moment.

I will aim to update it at some stage, but I haven't had as much free time in the last few months. I will certainly be aiming to update the inscribed sites on the map soon after this year's meeting. As soon as I get a new laptop anyway.

In regards to overlays with the actual site boundaries this is a surprisingly large task. I think with a bit of work we can get many of the natural heritage boundaries from Protected Planet, though they have changed their set up in the last few months and I can't quite get the information in the way that would be of most use to me for the map.

In regards to boundaries for cultural sites, in most cases these don't exist. I have them for the sites in England (Thanks to Historic England) and for the Czech Republic (because I drew them by hand myself).

If people out there know of national/ regional heritage bodies that keep boundary files in a .kml or .xls file then we should be able to incorporate those.

Sorry that isn't the best answers, but hopefully I an find some time to improve it.

I'll try to revive this project when I am back from Iran (after May 8)
