I was just wondering if anyone else out there had ever become a member of ICOMOS?

I had a membership bought for me as a present and noticed that you can get free or reduced entry to a number of WHS and other places around the world (a not particularly authoritative list can be found here).

I was just wondering if anyone else had ventured into the wonderful world of ICOMOS?

I'm guess I will try giving my card a flash at most sites I go to, so will let people know if it is worthwhile.

One thing I did notice is that all museums and sites run by the French Government are in there, so if you are heading to Paris, this could save you an awful lot of money, an annual membership in the UK is roughly about the same as a 4 day Paris museum pass. (Alas I found that out just after I got back from my last trip to Paris)

Another thing that i love Paris Museum Pass is that they will have special entrance for pass holder, so you don't have to queue or the queue is much shorter and that save time alot especially for Louvre, Orsey and Versailles. A good Investment.

That was true and in most cases it was nice. However the one with the longest queue was Sainte-Chapelle, but you couldn't skip the it there, which was a little disappointing.

Still it ended up good for me though, as it meant an early start the next day which had magnificent sunshine so the chapel was at its very best.

When I look at the Dutch ICOMOS website, it says that you have to be professionally involved in heritage management. And to become a member, you have to submit a resumé and be approved by a commission.

How was the process handled in your case?

It was just open to all, certainly no request for a resumé.

Details of UK membership can be found here.

Maybe you can join one in a different country, perhaps have a shop around for the best price :)
Drop me a line if I can help out.

They did ask me to join the register (haven't got around to doing that properly yet).

Right I have had a bit of a test run on this and here are the results.

These places offered free entrance with the card:
Madrid: Prado Museum, Reinia Sofia
Belgium Everywhere I tried I got free entry (Didn't try for the Gent Altarpiece though as it didn't really seems appropriate and it was only €4)
Brussels: Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Modern Art (I would guess all the Royal art museums have the same policy)
Brugge: Sint-Janshospitaal & Groeninge Museum
Antwerp: Plantain Moretus Museum, Rubbenshuis, Mayer van den Burgh

Half Price Entry:
Madrid: Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

No discount:
All sites I attempted it with at Toledo, including in the Cathedral

I haven't tried directly at any of London's WHS, but from asking around none seem to offer a discount, so it seems if I wan't to visit the Tower of London I will have to fork out £21 ($33/€25) I think I will skip another visit to that one then.
