Thought I start this, as I have heard people talking about their near misses among the inscribed sites for 2022/2023.

My own so far: Persian Caravanserai. Despite its 54 locations around the country, I did not visit one of them. The closest I got was to the one in Qazvin (Sa ʿadossaltaneh), where I visited the Chehelsotoon palace literally NEXT DOOR one street across. So I was within about 150m....

Cold deserts coming up... Not a near miss though. Just a place I tried to visit and had bad maps for.

A near miss by choice, though I really did consider it. I visited the Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark and could easily have continued on to Trelleborg. Though at the time, 2017 world heritage inscription for the Viking fortresses or a transnational nomination still seemed uncertain.

For me the missed ones are: Kazan observatories (visiting Kazan and sites in its vicinity), viking-era fortresses (while in Roskilde, for Trelleborg), Gaya tumuli (while spending few days in Busan) and 'Uruq Bani Ma'arid (on the way from Riyadh to Najran)...

Els's 150m is the distance to beat! And the best I can do is 3km - twice! I have been around 3km for the ESMA site in Buenos Aires plus also 3km from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (not progressing at this time). I have got absolute zip from this double round of inscriptions.

ESMA... Could have squeezed it in when I was in Buenos Aires. Now it's the distance from the airport to the site.
Erfurt... Was at the market square, so 500m? But not a biggie to fix.

Kaunas for me. I flew in and out of the airport when I visited Vilnius, a delayed return from Kernave squeezed my timetable and meant I got the direct airport coach, rather than my planned train to Kaunas and the local bus out to the airport after exploring the centre.

Though to be honest I didn't know of the Modernist reputation until I got back home, so it would have been a technical visit rather than a worthy one. Gives me plenty of reasons to properly visit.

I visited the Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark and could easily have continued on to Trelleborg.

2 years ago, I visited Denmark with my two kids (12 and 8 years old then). We visited Roskilde Cathedral and my plan was to have a look at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, then to go on to Trelleborg and over the big bridge to our hotel on the other side. So far so good - but my kids liked the viking ships so much that I had sadly to skip Trelleborg for time reasons, driving close by on the highway.
But even worse: A few days later we drove from Stevns Klint to Copenhague and I didn't realise, that Borgring would have been right next to the highway entrance.

My only near miss is Gordion. I have been in Ankara hundred times but never visited Gordion. It is not a big miss though, I can see it this summer during family visit.
I am happy that I chose to visit Koh Ker among the several tents around Siem Reap.

When I drove south Francs I already missed pont du gard and canal du midi. Yeah. Just due to bad planning.
So now i have a good reason to visit back to the area. still missing Albi, Pont darc and causseses as well anyway (bit more north though).

Till today 7 new visited WHS. Should be 2-3 more I hope.
so as long as it's about 30-35% my % of visited doesnt go down lol.

I missed the Observatory in Kazan also by about 150 m when walking along Bauman Street several times... How unfortunate!

I missed one of the Colonies of Benevolence in the Netherlands and cycled or walked (can't remember) past by... probably 400m. I'd just not put it in my phone on the map I was using, and once I was back home I did a thorough facepalm.

Erfurt, sadly :(
Visited Naumburg this summer and had to catch a connecting train at Erfurt Station. Decided not to extend my trip by going into the city centre for a couple of hours. So I missed the new site by approx. 1 km.

From this year's inscriptions, our closest near miss is Koh Ker. On our last visit to Cambodia, we did day trips to Preah Vihear and Sambor Prei Kuk from Siam Reap. Although we did want to return to visit Angkor Wat again, after having visited it so many years ago, back before we had seen many other similar sites. (We were the weird ones who stayed in Siam Reap and didn't visit Angkor Wat on our last visit...)

Still annoyed at missing visiting one of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Japan, inscribed back in 2021. One of the locations is kind of in walking distance of the train station, where we brought forward our return train to Tokyo by 1hr or 2hr, having no idea a tentative site was so close.
