They may be up for 2027 too:
1. Galapagos Islands (extension)
2. Beech Forests extension (France, Serbia, Montenegro)

Beech Forests indeed confirmed by Serbia on Jan 29:
"Serbia will nominate the beech forests in these three national parks jointly with France, Italy and Montenegro, and the inscription of the first natural property from Serbia on the World Heritage List would represent recognition of the successful preservation of natural heritage of European and global importance." (so Italy's update, more kind of a reformulation, is also part of this batch)

Further confirmation for Iran's 2 nominations for 2027.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has violently suppressed peaceful protests, slaughtered an estimated 100,000 of its own people who oppose life under a theocratic authoritarian regime. The IRGC is officially designated as a terrorist organization by the EU and the United States. The country is now facing internal armed resistance, including bombings as of today, with the risk of broader military escalation looming. In this context, I would kindly advise against discussing Iran's potential submission to the WHS Convention next year, as doing so does not resonate with the current reality and may appear disconnected from the gravity of the situation.

The Russian Federation is about as criminal as the Iranian regime, no disrespect. It is indeed a grave situation, though on this forum we have generally posted updates on nominations regardless of political realities. This has sometimes been difficult to not provide commentary (even disgust), because of the culpability and criminal actions by various state parties and especially their leaders actions that have led to horrific crimes. Numerous users on this forum have visited Iran and posts about Iran's long history does not affirm the current regime, nor did I express excitement that Iran continues to nominate sites to the World Heritage List.

I am sorry that my update may have caused offense, it was not intended.

Tarrafal Concentration Camp (Cabo Verde)

I thought they already submitted the nomination file, but it seems like Cabo Verde might need a bit more time? Either way, 2027 may be a historic year for new African inscriptions. The African region has never had more than 7 inscriptions at one World Heritage Session and the last time that happened was 1980. Right now, we have 10 African nominations listed (though a few could be pre-mature).

Thanks for the kind message, winterkjm. You're right that this forum is meant to discuss WHS independently of politics, and there's no need to apologize, I'm not offended at all. What felt strange to me was the timing of discussing Iran's nomination given the many uncertainties right now: we don't know whether the nominated sites might be damaged or destroyed by military action, whether there will be a regime change, or whether this could turn into a long-lasting conflict with a severe human cost. In such situations, I believe human life should take absolute priority over cultural heritage. A historical example is the Bamiyan Valley, where, while the people of Afghanistan were living in extreme hardship, much of the international attention focused on saving statues rather than on saving lives—this disconnect played a role in how those monuments ultimately came to be destroyed. For these reasons, I feel it may be better not to place too much emphasis on WHS discussions during periods of profound human uncertainty.

Iran is a culturally rich nation and deserves to continue adding its sites to the World Heritage List. Fortunately, the opinions of the EU and US regimes do not align with the opinions of the much larger rest of the world. Iran's cultural heritage may be at risk from a potential invasion that is being plotted to plunge the nation into chaos and technological backwardness.

I think we (this community) all care for each countries cultural and natural heritage, otherwise why be so engaged on this webpage? While we cannot personally alter in real-time decisions being made by various governments or leaders, there is something about World Heritage that is aspirational to the best of humankind. Even we see the flaws every WHC session, but we've learned to look past them.

Dear mmarqz, your knowledge of the region and its people seems quite limited, and I don't think this forum is the right place for this discussion. I suggest you to read more about the topic from balanced sources, rather than ones promoting Islamic imperialism or showing strong anti-American and anti-Israeli bias.
