we don't have an Italian candidate listed for 2027. Have we overlooked one?

The Eocene Marine Ecosystems at Bolca and in the Alpone Valley (Italy)

Really, I was not expecting this.

Early Medieval Benedictine Settlements (Italy)

Looks like Italy's serial nomination will be decided in 2028. Additionally, the components have decreased from 8 to 4.

https://www.isnews.it/2026/01/18/monasteri-benedettini-patrimonio-dellunesco-san-vincenzo-al-volturno-resta-in-corsa/

This was a harsh move!!! It seems that many community members (me incldued) have "lost" this tentative site now. We need to update the pictures, too, because they all show the Sacra di San Michele in Piedmont, which appeared to be the most visited component. I have no fit one, though, sicne I had only visited the Northern components.

I may be able to provide a picture. I visited the Sacro Speco in Subiaco this Summer.

The Hajj Pilgrimage Routes: The Darb Zubaydah (Iraq, Saudi)

"In January 2026, Iraq and Saudi Arabia finalized the nomination file for the Kufa Hajj Route, also known as the "Darb Zubayda" (Historical Hajj Route), for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A joint specialized meeting was held between the Iraqi Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities and the Saudi Ministry of Culture to review the final touches to the file before its official submission to the World Heritage Centre. On January 21, 2026, a final meeting of the technical teams from both countries discussed the technical and documentary aspects of the nominated sites, ensuring compliance with UNESCO's criteria for cultural sites of outstanding universal value. This nomination marks the first transboundary heritage file in the Arab world submitted jointly by two countries, giving it a unique cultural and collaborative dimension." - Report January 2026

If I recall correctly, recently deferred nominations no longer fill each state party's annual quota, thus Iran should be able to submit another nomination? Because it seems like Iran has done just that with the submission of a long-lingering nomination from their tentative list.

The Historical Port of Siraf (Iran)

The World Heritage Site of the Historical Port of Siraf has been submitted to UNESCO

This is correct (I verified with the Operational Guidelines)

Iran will probably submit nothing until regime change is completed.

Therefore, we conceivably might get two nominations each from Mongolia and Iran.

winterkjm:
- Desert Landscapes of the Mongolian Great Gobi (Mongolia)
- Eastern Mongolian Steppes (Mongolia)

winterkjm:
Masuleh Cultural Landscape and Its Associated Metalworking Sites (Iran)
The Historical Port of Siraf (Iran)

Masuleh and the Mongolian Steppes both formerly evaluated with a deferral.

China's nomination will not be Hainan but the Guizhou Triassic Fossil Sites (coming from a reliable source but I have not found a link yet)

Two marine fossil sites by both Italy and China in the same year! For Hainan, no wonder! I visited the Li tribe at Baicha Village last December, still questioning the OUV and its authenticity from those new mud house and fresh roof.

Based on Zoë Sheng's sole review of this TWHS, I suspect (despite the tick) that she is not overly enthusiastic about this nomination being submitted.
