A few additional thoughts to your list, winterkjm. I have it almost 1-on-1 on the WHC 2027 page:
- Where shall we place Iznik now on the timeline? Kultepe-Kanesh as Turkiye's candidate for 2027 seems quite firm. I am inclined to move it back to normal tentative status and not move it forward under 'nominated'. (it got a rejection advice in 2023 and was then withdrawn).
- Koytendag. LOL. Talked about for so long. Last news I could find is that they're exploring a transnational nomination with Surkhan (Uzbekistan). Does not seem firm enough to me to move it to Nominated.
- Bagh-e Babur: the Taliban nomination that was overlooked (on purpose?). It is still out there somewhere, but I could not find any recent news.
- Civil Rights Movement Sites: on Hold as reported by you; I've moved it back to 2028 but of course unsure
- Grossglockner: seems a difficult site to nominate. Very few news updates, we would have heard it if they had made progress. Propose to move it back to Tentative status.
- Lake Chad CL: no change in the situation on the ground. Formally it will still be on the table but no evaluation can take place.
- Tabon Cave (Philippines): unsure. Our Filipino members may know more.

And an immediate update: they will nominate Samar Island NP for 2027

Civil Rights Movement Sites

I am trying to get final confirmation if anything will move forward (regardless if a nomination dossier is complete or not) and if the US 2026 nomination will be withdrawn (which is likely not out of the question at this point). I was told recently by a former NPS staff member that there is no longer a 'World Heritage program' in the US. One caveat is I got new contact info with active staff to make new inquiries. Hoping to hear back soon. Either way its looking grim.

Memorials to the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War: Brest Fortress and Mamayev Kurgan (Belarus, Russia)

Do we feel confident this nomination is still moving forward? I couldn't find much to indicate a nomination file ready for submission.

Mongolian, Belarusian . . . Not for the first time did I wish various countries published a steady stream of reports on World Heritage similar to what I see in Korean on a routine basis. I don't have X or Instagram, which seems to be more commonly used these days in regards to World Heritage announcements.

When I am in 'travel purgatory', I have more time to do some deep-diving to discover what nominations may show some activity. Currently, not going anywhere until late March (Puerto Rico).

Early Medieval Benedictine Settlements (Italy)

Looks like Italy's serial nomination will be decided in 2028. Additionally, the components have decreased from 8 to 4.

Memorials to the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War: Brest Fortress and Mamayev Kurgan (Belarus, Russia)

Belarus has a few more years yet in regards to Brest Fortress.

"Given the lifting of the ban on considering sites that participated in military events in 2023, a nomination for the Brest Hero Fortress and Mamayev Kurgan memorials was prepared in collaboration with Russian colleagues. "In 2024, they were added to the UNESCO Tentative List. I believe that by 2029-2030, it will be possible to include these two sites on the UNESCO List," concluded Sergei Sarakach."

I am starting to wonder about Armenia's nomination Tatev Monastery and Vorotan Gorge. I'm getting the feeling that this nomination will be submitted in time (or perhaps already has) for 2027. There are plenty of articles and Facebook posts confirming a 'submission' at various points from Spring to Winter 2025. Based on the 2024 Preliminary Assessment submissions, The Vishaps and the Cultural Landscape of Tirinkatar will be Armenia's next candidate (potentially 2028). So does the Tatev Monastery submit before the required preliminary assessment for 2027 or is it aiming for 2029?

I will remove the markers from our map and put in a note. Good find!

P.S.: this means that we don't have an Italian candidate listed for 2027. Have we overlooked one?
