24 hours later, most new WHS are off the mark and have been "claimed" by our community. Even Taputapuātea.

3 are still on 0 visits:
- Mbanza Kongo
- Okinoshima Island
- Landscapes of Dauria

What a pity - I was in Fukuoka last year, and Munakata seems to be just next to it. Oh well.

Thank you. I had prepared the texts and connections for the new WHS already last week during the 4 hour flights each from and to the Azores. Although I had not counted that so many deferrals also got in.

There are still some minor points to check or add. For example if we have missed any serial locations on the new nominations. And adding more connections, including those for the timeline.

But you worked all weekend on it too, when we decided to bring the new version of the website software live exactly during the most exciting weekend of the year!

A dozen committee terms end in 2017,

Apparently the replacements will be elected at the next "General Assembly". This is scheduled to meet in Paris 14 -15 Nov 2017.
Candidatures have to be notified at least 6 weeks before hand (some of them get picked up in the news of the countries concerned)
Any State Party "in arrears" with its contributions is not allowed to take part!
See http://whc.unesco.org/en/ga/

And next year's WHC will have to be held in the country of one of the members NOT retiring. Could it be one of the 2019 retirees as a "swan song" or would they rather wait until the following year?

Normally I don't do deployments on a high load day. But on the other hand what better date for the update :D

No State Party has stepped forward to host the next WHC. Canada asked is there any barriers to host the meeting in Paris?

"YES, it costs too much!"

"Roll up roll up to volunteer -
Cost - Quite a lot
Return - lots of diplomatic compliments and the probability of a WHS inscription which hardly deserves it"

I see that the final decision on this on Tuesday was to wait for the General Assembly meeting in Nov when, inter alia, the new Committee members will be elected. Presumably some State Party will have been persuaded by then but what to do if this is not the case isn't raised at this point!! In the mean time Poland continues in a form of "regency" as Chair, as do the other vice Chairs, Rapporteur etc etc and the Secretariat will cover certain other matters in the interim (The item is discussed from 2hr 49 minutes on 11 July in the recorded streaming). The question of why not Paris boils down to the cost of "security guards" in the evening (I joke not - this was actually said!!) - just too much for the budget.

One wonders if the time hasn't been reached for questioning the entire role and format of the WHC? Mention was made that there have been 2500 participants at this year's WHC (cut back on these to help pay for those expensive Parisian security guards??) ! Clearly there can be many networking benefits from such a meeting but it does seem to have developed into a rather unwieldy behemoth. But one cannot see such a root and branch question being raised when there are also so many political benefits to some participants from the current role and format!
