Traditional Buddhist Mountain Temples of Korea is the more likely Korean nomination for 2018. The Petroglyph site is muddled by politics regarding what is the best solution to protect the site from seasonal flooding over the site. No one can agree on the solution, temporary barrier, long-term, or shutting down the dam, and finding alternative water sources for the significant population nearby. This could take years.

This local news from Baden-Baden reports on a meeting with the 16 cities of the serial nomination Great Spas of Europe in Bath. The next meeting will be held in Vichy in May.
According to the current schedule, the final submission of the nomination dossier will be in January 2017, so decision could be in 2018.

ShuDao seems to be aiming for 2017, but this date is unlikely with the glut of nominations vying for a slot. Nevertheless, it is still unclear at this point which natural/mixed nomination (if any) has been officially selected. Qinghai Hoh Xil could just as easily be delayed until 2018.

I understand that an unresolved "issue" about this nomination is that, whilst everyone agrees that 16 is too many sites to nominate, all 6 German sites want to remain in!!!! To the extent that "non German" sites voluntarily withdraw, the %age of German ones remaining obviously increases still further!!

One possible "strategy" (reminiscent of the Le Corbusier nomination???) is for a nomination with all of them to go forward and leave the "decision" to ICOMOS. It seems unlikely that ICOMOS would actually decide 100% which sites should remain but, at least it could give some "pointers" as to where it sees/doesn't see OUV

One of Korea's strongest cultural nominations on the tentative list. Its backer is the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, which has extensive resources to support this nomination. If a strong, detailed nomination is sent I would expect an inscription in 2018.

Arguably this is a "gap" concerning Korean heritage. The only Korean Buddhist temples that are inscribed on the world heritage are secondary in focus. Haeinsa Temple is primarily concerned with the Tripitaka Koreana and the specially designed buildings to house them. Haeina Temple, not including the 81,000 priceless Buddhist woodblocks, is not a particularly exceptional temple in Korea. Additionally, Bulguksa Temple was only tagged onto the Seokguram nomination because of the suggested pairing by ICOMOS. Moreover, Bulguksa Temple is almost entirely reconstructed except for the extraordinary pagodas and stonework throughout the temple. Therefore, I happily support this nomination of the most representative and exceptional Buddhist Temples found in Korea.
