Anuradhapura -- impressive gigantic stupa architecture, cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka which later influence SE Asian art and culture, important site for pilgrim to worship sacred Bodhi tree (MAYBE) Bagerhat -- already discussed in Hindu, regional importance only (NO) Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur -- already discussed in Buddhism, one of biggest vihara but the style is not unique and can be find in NE south Asia (NO) Champaner-Pavagadh -- early Islamic Mughal development, I preferred the best at Agra (NO) Chola Temples -- already discussed in Hindu, impressive Hindu temple, representative of southern Indian art (YES) Elephanta Caves -- impressive art but very small better represent by Ellora (NO) Ellora Caves -- A real gems of Indian rock art, not only artistic but engineering masterpiece (YES) Fatehpur Sikri -- Another beautiful Mughal city-palace, better represent by Red Fort (NO) Hampi -- ruined city of Hindu Kingdom with many great art and unique location (YES) Makli, Thatta -- ruined tombs (NO) Moenjodaro -- this should be considered under pre historic (?) its significant is undeniable for Indus Valley Civilization (YES) Pattadakal -- Another Hindu temples that represent artistic development that can be represent by Hampi or Chola (NO) Polonnaruva --Beautiful arts of Quadrangle and Gal Vihara are superb, I would choose this more than Arunadhapura to represent Sri Lankan art (YES) Rani-ki-Vav -- Unique step well art (MAYBE) Taxila -- I ready discussed in Buddhism (NO) Sigiriya -- impressive sight of fortress palace with beautiful fresco, ruined giant lion, full with mystery, and the garden is really unique (YES)
SE Asia (9) Angkor -- nothing much to say (YES) Ayutthaya -- Important city of SE Asia history with gigantic temple ruins and palace, a showcase of regional civilization (MAYBE) My Son -- Champa art is very important for SE Asia history but few remains after bombs in Vietnam war (NO) Preah Vihear Temple -- Khmer art better represent by Angkor (NO) Pyu Ancient Cities -- I still prefer to wait for Bagan to represent this regional arts (NO) Sukhothai -- Cradle of Thai Civilization with beautiful Sukothai styles (YES) Thang Long -- Vietnamese citadel in Hue maybe a better representative, also few original remain (NO) Vat Phou -- Khmer art better represent by Angkor (NO) Ho Citadel -- few remains except the city wall (NO) |
