Hi everyone! I'd love to hear your comments on my draft itinerary to Fiji below. I will be travelling with someone who would rather relax and drink coffee at a cafe than hike through a UNESCO site. He is a hardcore diver though and this trip is going to be perfect for him. I am a diver too, and so we're looking forward to diving in this part of the South Pacific. Unfortunately, we only have 8 full days for this trip, because I don't have much leave left. :(

15 June - arrival, Nadi
16 June - drive to Sigatoka sand dunes on the way to Beqa Lagoon
17 June - Beqa Lagoon diving
18 June - Beqa Lagoon diving
19 June - Beqa Lagoon diving
20 June - drive to Suva and take flight or ferry to Levuka
21 June - Levuka
22 June - Levuka
23 June - Levuka to Nadi via Suva and flight back to Wellington

I thought Beqa Lagoon is the best choice for diving given that it is on Queens Rd between Sigatoka and Suva, and a centre for shark diving (the thought of diving with hammies, bull, and tiger sharks is exciting!). But I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions, particularly on (1) dive sites, (2) transport between Levuka and Suva, (3) other things to do in Ovalau, and (4) public transport or car hires in Viti Levu.

Thank you!

I've never been to Fiji and I've certainly never dived there. But there was a feature on Fiji in the Feb/March edition of Wanderlust magazine which included what the author considered to be Fiji's five 'best dives'. You'll be reassured to hear that the Beqa Island tiger shark dive was listed at number 1. The only other site in Viti Levu that made the top 5 was the Suncoast near Volivoli resort, which puts you a bit nearer Ovalau I guess (though I don't know the details on connections between VL & Levuka).

TL;DR - sounds like you've made the right choice.

Thank you Liam.

I wish Fiji has included some of their marine parks on their tentative list. :(

We just visited Fiji. I can't comment on the diving, as I haven't dived in Fiji, only snorkelling on a previous trip (to the Yasawa Islands).

There is definitely car hire at Nadi Airport, although we didn't hire a car ourselves. We used the Pacific/Sunbeam buses from Nadi to Suva, then Goundar Shipping for the bus/ferry to Levuka. There are two connections per day with Goundar in between Suva and Levuka. I believe commercial flights to Ovalau are no longer operational due to the state of the runway. The Goundar ferry departs from Natovi Jetty and take cars - you could take you car across to Levuka? The email address is: goundarshipping@kidanet.com.fj

We didn't get up to much on Ovalau, just walking around town and relaxing, although we could have organised some island tours using the local taxis and guides. With your own car, you could drive around the island and explore more. Note that the road is gravel outside of Levuka.

Thank you! This is what I thought of as well.

Be aware that Levuka is very small - you could comfortably walk Beach Street a couple of times, explore the back streets and check out basically every listed building in 2-3 hours. If you're happy to just chill out and relax, then two full days in Levuka is great. The main reason we allowed two nights to Levuka was buffer for transport issues ("Fiji Time"), though everything worked perfectly. Oh and like most of Viti Levu and the closer in islands, there aren't really any beaches to swim at near Levuka, so don't plan on relaxing at the beach!

One other thing to note - with Goundar Shipping, they told us in Suva that it was "5am loading for a 6am departure". What that actually meant was "5am loading and then going when everyone's on board", so the bus actually left at 5:40am! Don't show up 10 minutes before departure :)

Thanks, Joel for the tips! Yes, Levuka is super tiny, so we decided to do it overnight but we are making the following night free should there be transportation issues. I am not looking forward to the super early departure schedules both from Suva and Levuka though :(

Has anyone stayed in an accommodation other than Levuka Homestay? They are fully booked on the night we are arriving in Levuka :(
