New country topic, yay!!

Not many reviews for this place. It's small and has a lot of variety but I think most natural places seem rather on the lame side. It also seems expensive to rent a car and arrange transport to anywhere and I believe most tourists will stay in the capital anyway.

I have also noticed quite a few places are offroad so either one takes a 4WD and finds it in the middle of nowhere or the local guides know how to actually get to those places. Perhaps the few people who have been there can give some advice on this.

Hi,

What do you need to know? Have been to all the TWHS there.
the rock art is amazing! I also loved Lake Abbeh. the rest, yeah soso.

4x4 is required if you want the rock art and lake abbeh. All rest can be done in normal car but might be not nice.

yes expensive!

note to rewrite all here, see my blog about it

TWHS of Les Tumulus (Awellos)

We don't have a location for this. Anyone who has researched it before?
It's a bit of a mystery, but there seem to be 2 locations:
1. Randa
2. Dasbyo

There is only one coordinate given on the UNESCO website, and that is in an invalid format.
However, when I tweak it a bit by adding a "." I reach this location: https://www.google.nl/maps/place/11%C2%B014'24.0%22N+42%C2%B049'12.0%22E/@11.2400053,42.259311,9z/data=!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d11.24!4d42.82?entry=ttu which indeed is Dasbyo (no. 2)

The town of Randa is here, I'd guess the tumuli would be just outside of town closer to the national park.

But on Google Maps there's nothing there at either location.

This website identifies the location of the town of Dasbyio (with that additional i in the spelling) as here. So pretty close to your marker Els.

There are some roundish looking things on the satelite images, though this picture shows them to be shurbs. It is hard to pick out anything really matching the description:
The size of the mounds is 2 to 3 m high and around thirty meters wide. They are made of black stones.

Like you Els, I can't initially pick out something in Randa that matches the description either.

Though from looking at christravelblog's photo they may not be especially easy to pick out (nor likely to be inscribed).

====
Just discovered an alternative spelling in French: aowelos

Led me to this french wikipedia page and this article in le Monde, the google image searches look much richer for this spelling, with some research papers with maps, the site on the maps identified as Asgoumhati doesn't seem to be too far from Randa, could be promising.

Have to get on with some work but it could prove more fruitful.

Yes Asgoumhati also is named in the proposed OUV statement.

Roman has just tried to visit these elusive Awellos and the Gravures Rupestre d'Abourma, he reports back: "The Gravures were out of limit because of rebel activities in that area. But with some luck, it was possible to visit the Awellos at Dorra (also that area is officially restricted because of these rebels). At Randa, there are no Awellos around (for sure). The closest ones are those of Dorra (33 km northwest of Randa). There is a new and paved road from Tadjuara to Randa and Dorra." He provided the main site picture and the coordinates for Dorra, which I have added to the site as well (may take a day or so to show).
