In the comments section of the recent blog post One thousand visitors or fewer, we came to speak about PNG's only WHS so far: Kuk. Further research into its visitor statistics and tourism infrastructure has led to some findings that I think are interesting for future visitors.

First, there is this study from 2018 which is worth reading so you know what to look for while visiting. It even shows a rudimentary WHS plaque on page 29.

The study also mentions that there is a 'Kuk World Heritage Interpretive Centre'. The e-mail address of the person managing it can be seen on the board on page 29 as well. Solivagant sent him an e-mail, and he got a friendly reply stating that :
- the Kuk Interpretative Center is indeed established; there are also plans for a Kuk Museum and Art Gallery.
- in a 'normal' year (before Covid) they had 100-150 visitors, including students, academic researchers and diplomats.

So from the next person who 'ticks' Kuk, I expect no less than a report about visiting the Kuk Interpretative Center and a photo of the plaque!

Thanks for this information, I like that plaque, and well done Solivagant for getting the e-mail address off of it.

One thing I note, I think all the markers are marginally off. If I understand the map properly the marker is in the buffer zone and not the core zone.

The official map highlights the whole of the "Government Experimental Tea Plantation" which is the grid like planting you can see on satelite maps.
However the Core zone comprises only the south eastern sector (2 Eastern most columns and 4 southern most rows). I'm fairly confident that means the current marker is in the buffer zone and shoud be the other side of the road.

If we wanted to correct it I think tweaking it 100m east to: -5.783773, 144.332740 would be in the core zone.

I normally wouldn't be quite so picky (perhaps I would :)) but I wouldn't want someone to get so close and find they had only been in the buffer zone based off of mildly erroneous data.

I'm sure the visitor centre would point them in the right direction anyway, I just didn't want a pang of guilt for not flagging it up.
