Having just read Clyde's recent review of The works of Jože PleÄnik in Ljubljana – Human Centred Urban Design I'm in two minds on the short title we use: Ljubljana, it doesn't quite feel right to me.
In the pro column: - All the projects are in Ljubljana - It is actually about the urban plan of the city, including what would legitimately be viewed as the City Centre. - From a practical travellers point of view, visiting Ljubljana will be the only way to visit the site.
In the con column: - It doesn't really get to the root of what the OUV of the site is. It isn't really the centre of Ljubljana that is inscribed, it is about the specific urban planning and works of Jože PleÄnik - Other sites associated with a specific architect are listed by their name or the building name: The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, Sydney Opera House) - We have used city names where a single architect is very prominent, but in these cases the whole centre is specifically inscribed: Brasilia, le Havre, Vicenza* - In other cases where the works of a single architect are within one city we separate them out: Works of Antoni Gaudi, Major Town Houses (of Victor Horta) - In cases where a specific part of the urban plan is inscribed we highlight that: Paris, Banks of the Seine, Roman Walls of Lugo, Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro
So someone reading that Ljubljana is a WHS may (not unreasonably) conclude that they have ticked it off, but they may not actually visit any of the inscribed parts (a bit of a stretch to think they wouldn't cross the inscribed parts of the river banks I know, but indulge me) you could visit: the main station, parliament, cathedral, old town, castle, major squares (Prešernov, Republike, Stari), Tivoli park and the Opera House and not be in the core zone, but you have certainly visited Ljubljana.
My proposal for a shorter name would be something like: Works of Jože PleÄnik in Ljubljana -or- PleÄnik's Lubljana
*I also don't think Vicenza really captures what that site is inscribed for, the focus is really on the works of Palladio and the urban fabric of Vicenza is somewhat secondary. I would propose something like: Vicenza and the Palladian Villas |
